Wife and two daughters of senior editor James Kim found in Oregon; search is still on for James Kim, who left the car on foot two days ago.

The wife and daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive and airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference in Merlin, Ore., Monday afternoon.

James Kim left the car on snowshoes two days ago to seek help and has not been found, the official said. The search for him continues.

According to the official speaking at the news conference, the conditions of Kati, Penelope and Sabine are not yet known. More details are expected at a press conference at 5 p.m. PST, which CNET will stream live.

Kati Kim reportedly flagged down a helicopter rented by families of the missing persons.

After searches in Oregon's Curry and Douglas counties, new information on missing CNET senior editor James Kim and his family narrowed the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County, according to reports Monday.

A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family's cell phones at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale at that time, according to a report in The Oregonian.

Go back to counting cards, having fits and flying Quantas...you continue to show you really don't have a clue.

He did'nt deliberately choose the road they ended up on. They thought it was another road. It is an unfortunate situation. As many of the locals have said...a lot of people make the same mistake the Kim's made - it happens all the time.

When are you thick-headed people going to get it? What happened to the Kim's is not their fault. It has nothing to do with being PC (I am probably one of most non-PC people here at FR...all the way back to when JimRob started this). You cannot put the blame on someone because they made a mistake like this. You must be very young because you really don't understand life and how it works.

'Scuse me. It says they were "on the ridge" and tried to use the cell phone (from the car). But I had gone through the topo maps and there was much higher ground nearby that should have been used.

Probably would not have been better. Even in Galice cell phones will not get a signal. At least the last time I tried, 2 years ago, they would not.

You don't have a clue. "They" weren't driving from Seattle to SF, they were driving to Gold Beach. I say "they" because they were a married couple, and according to interviews with Kati they seemed to make decisions together about what route to take.

Had he driven that route "many a time", he would have known to stay on the better route.

Keep it up.

The more you say, the worse you look.

I've heard about this cold feet thing. It don't know what that is. I do know 'bout cold fingers though. I don't like that.

As far as slushy base snow, it has to be skiied once by every mountain skier to understand that at 10000' things are a wee bit different than at 8000' (especially in a full days sunshine).

NO, one has to be able to make those last 500' of vertical drop without that stinkin' sno-cat ride to truly enjoy the hot-tub.

Dad taught me that 90% of skiing in in the brain.

Last time I was at Veil, we decided to go to the lodge. The ski partner I was with mentioned just that: slushy snow. He was worried he didn't have 2.5+ hours in in him to get to the base. I told him, you feel good now? You can ski now? Lets take a couple more runs up/down where we are (near 10000') then I'll show you how to get down the mountain.

We took that last 500' vertical drop on a black diamond. The thing was that at 3 P.M. that snow was so soft. He told me later that he never felt like a "fly on a wall" like that day (with the full afternoon Veil sun beating down on that last black diamond slope).

It was so much less effort to come down the steep in the slush than it would've been to go down the slush along the green. Seriously, all it took was confidence in one's ability to turn.

I'll qualify the foregoing with this: he was a lot younger than I (and in much better shape than me), was skiing the latest shaped ski's for "intermediate", and I was "expert" skill skier that was utterly out of shape, skiing on top-of-the-line recreational/sport-performance boards from '92.

He never did come down that side of the mountain again though. He, and the girls, sat in the base-side lounge with me on one of the last few days, and we examined that face we trekked down. Nobody said anything. But nobody went down it again either. The weather did get sort of nasty (colder), so it wasn't slushy like that. Nobody praised me for my Godlike skiing abilities.

On the plane trip back, Brian told me that he appreciated me taking him down the mountain the way I did. He told me that it had gotten him over some sort of fear he had concerning black-diamond runs. He said that nobody ever did that for him before: before you went down the hill you pointed out were you were going.

Guess how I found that way down the mountain? Yep, my legs noodled on me going down the green traverse into the slushy. Next day I KNEW that I could handle slush on a 70o wall facing the sun all day, with ambient at about 60o, and cover two miles in about 200yds/500' vertical drop).

Skiing is cool. Its way too cool for words. Its like trying to explain why and how one came to know, understand, and accept Christ Jesus as their personal savior.

Oh, my God, how heartbreaking and he was only a mile from where their car was located... had circled around.

What I heard was that they intended to take Hwy 42 of I-5 and took the wrong exit, Merlin-Galice Rd. If you take that road just before you get to Galice you see a sign indicating a left turn will get you to Gold Beach, about 65 miles. Or perhaps they intended to take 199 from I-5 to the coast. No matter, when they got on Galice Rd I can understand why they took the left turn. I went that way in the summer one time to Gold Beach because I thought it would be quicker. Wrong, took me about 3 hours to go the 65 miles.

OMG Rainman you were wrong...you made a mistake. Can you believe it? Now go hold yourself responsible for that mistake and bang your head against the wall for a while!

Alright. Rainman, I believe we encountered each other before. You have a queer way of saying things. Anybody ever tell you that?

You're absolutely right 'bout what you said to me. The husband stands in judgment before the Lord in a harsher light than his family. I'm inferring that you know that. I don't know why, I'm just guessing that you do.

You're absolutely correct in that he not being prepared does not excuse his failure in the eyes of men.

I believe that the time to talk 'bout all that is way long gone.

What is most heartbreaking is just how close they were to Bear Lake Lodge...

I pray my boys grow up to be the man that James Kim was. I would also be proud to have a man like Mr. Kim for a husband, as I'm sure, Kati is and was very proud of him.

If YOU were my husband and made the remarks to me that you've made on this thread, I would be running to court to file for a divorce first thing tomorrow morning. Someone making such vile judgements without even bothering to get the facts would make me afraid. Very afraid.

I guess the appropriate phrase would be:

Oh bless your heart... :)

Did I get it right?

this isn't copyrighted material RG is it? You better watch out - this could be considering mp3 sharing...

Actually if I were lost in the situation James was in I can think of several hymns I would sing to keep me going!

Powerful stuff.
