Some opponents were softening, but the controversial U.N. ambassador's resignation is yet another sign of the changed political landscape after Nov. 7
The resignation of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations marks another acknowledgement by the White House of the political consequences of the Nov. 7 Congressional elections.
....
Chafee, who was defeated for reelection, issued a statement reiterating his opposition. " Mr. Bolton did not demonstrate the kind of collaborative approach that I believe will be called for if we are to restore the United States ' position as the strongest country in a peaceful world," he said. "This would be an appropriate time to choose a nominee who has a proven ability to work with both sides of the political aisle, a history of building strong international relationships and a reputation of respect for the institution of the United Nations. The names Brent Scowcroft and George Mitchell come to mind immediately as outstanding candidates. " There's no word from White House yet on whom it might nominate as Bolton's replacement.

It appears Chaffee is the source of the George Mitchell rumour.

How about Sen. Ben Nelson ? That way we'll have a 50-50 split in the Senate with Cheney as the 51st vote. ;-)

Drudge has a headline at the moment saying, "George Mitchell said to be 'on short list' for UN ambassador..."
Well now we know where that short list came from and who "said" it.

George Mitchell?
To me (for what my opinion is worth), he's out of the question.
But I'm sure he's in good standing with the Beltway boys and girls.
And that ought to be good enough.

Actually Santorum would be a good pick. Remember John Ashcroft? The US Senate would have a hard time refusing one of their own.

The best part BY FAR of the '06 elections are that this CLOWN will be gone shortly, and we won't have to listen to his pathetic backstabbing being praised as 'maverick' actions.
Go to hell Linc.

Thanks, Ivan.
Now we see where this stupid rumor came from. I daresay that the President isn't going to be taking the advice of this jerk.
