By the NewsMax.com Staff For the story behind the story...

Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 10:44 a.m. EST Saddam May Escape Hangman's Noose

Saddam Hussein waited until the last minute before filing an appeal to his death sentence, and frequently delayed his trial with verbal tirades.

It all makes sense considering a little-reported Iraqi law, which bars the execution of anyone age 70 and above.

Saddam turns 70 in April.

On November 5, Saddam was sentenced to hang after being convicted of ordering the deaths of 148 Shiites in the village of Dujail in 1982. He is still on trial on other charges.

Saddam’s lawyers had 30 days from the date of sentencing to file an official appeal. They waited until Sunday, December 3.

The case now goes to a higher court. But there is no time limit for the appeal court’s review, and the earliest realistic date for the former Iraqi dictator’s execution, if it stands up to review, would reportedly be in the spring.

What’s more, "a recent report by New York-based Human Rights Watch concluded that Hussein’s trial was so seriously flawed that the verdict could be called into question,” according to the Washington Post.

So there is a good chance, if Iraqi law is not changed, that the appeal process could stretch past April 28, Saddam’s 70th birthday – allowing the convicted mass murderer to cheat the hangman.

Another slap in the face of our current servicemen and GWI vets.

No wonder the cases of PTSD are skyrocketing...No closure.

No, I recall the court has 30 days to rule. He may be swinging by Feb.

Seems like we should just pass him a bit of Polonium 210 in his tea.

HE didn't care how many 70 year old HE killed! Why should we care, also?!!!

OK. Order him released. In Iraqi Kurdistan at a pre-announced time and place. I'd let him know this is exactly what would be done if he continued to file appeals.

The next appeal might be to move up the date, where he would get his own platform and the opportunity to make a gallows speech.

My guess is that what happens is Saddam officially escapes execution, and then very late in Bush's presidency he passes away in detention from "natural causes".

My question as well.

I don't trust this source. Mostly because it doesn't jibe with other information we have.

'I'm Saddam Hussein, I'm the president of Iraq and I'm willing to negotiate'," recalled Major Brian Reed, operations officer for the first brigade of the Fourth Infantry Division."

Major Reed said he responded to Saddam: "President Bush sends his regards."

So he'll die in prison, a tired sick old man. Big deal. I hope whatever it is that ultimately kills him is long, slow, and extremely painful and humiliating. If there is any justice in the world he will expire while wallowing in his own filth.

Not a very Christian atitude, but I'm sick of this POS and the wanton carnage that follows wherever he's been.

Wishful thinking of the libs, media and Ramsey Clark.
He will hang. The Iraqi Goverment can't allow him to survive this trial. The Shias in particular (but also Kurds) won't accept it. He WILL hang.

That would be delicious--but--we all know that if he so much as sneezes while in captivity (despite the fact he's being held by Iraqis), the President will be brought up on war crimes charges.

I always figured he would escape execution, but not this way.

I find Mewsmax to be very suspect. Not to say they're not right, but I'd need to do some other digging before I buy off on this. If the story is repeated somewhere else I'm more likely to give it credence...

Hopefully about a month before the 2008 election, especially if Osama-Obama is the candidate. See tagline.
