Where have all the conservatives gone?
Are there going to be any running for President?
First it was Virginia’s George Allen, the great white hope, the George on a horse, the governor with a smile, on his way to a White House run, once he got past that frisky re-election campaign.
He was, less than a short year ago, the Hotline’s unknown front-runner, the insider’s best guess, the neocon’s next new best friend.
Now, thanks to a Macaca joke, a ham sandwich joke, a terrible campaign, and some smart moves by senator-elect Jim Webb, he’s toast.
Then there was Rick Santorum. Mr. Conservative. Surely he would at least make a run. Give the hard core a place to be. Just as soon as he got past his Senate re-election campaign in Pennsylvania. The number three Senate Republican and conservative stalwart is as good a friend as conservatives have in the Senate.
Correction: Had. History.
Hello Bob Casey. Goodbye Rick Santorum. Another one bites the dust.

I think that it is a major error to look inside the Beltway for Conservative leadership. There is just too much evidence that most Republicans in Washington have severely compromised their principles, which means that they do not have the credibility to run for President.
My December Essay addresses the Conservative Dilemma, and briefly discusses the Pennsylvania Senate defeat. I have not posted the feature at Free Republic, as a thread, because I did not want to rub salt in anyone's wounds in this venue. But, frankly, the subject of Karl Rove, and where he has taken the Party at the Federal level needs to be faced and openly discussed.
That said, it is my hope that someone with the principles and skills of Ronald Reagan may yet emerge to rekindle a truly Conservative groundswell in the Republican Party at the State and local levels.

Well, W, I think you could have guessed that Cheney would not be running in 2008 when you first chose him. That's what I'm talking about. Of course, that's not your only consideration, I understand. But on the other hand, this would obviously be the result. And unfortunately, it probably means we're going to have a Democrat for the next President. Or maybe we'll get lucky and end up with McCain, Giuliani, or Romney. Uhggg!

I'm not sure Ike was that happy to hand Nixon the easy road to the nomination in '60. Or Reagan to hand it to Bush I in '92.

They don't choose them because they want a successor. They choose them because they want someone who'll add a few votes to the ticket.
Maybe that's what W was thinking. But he sure did screw us over in the process.

Santorum didn't have a commanding lead that he squandered away. Santorum was in a blue state unlike Allen. It was Santorum's to lose. Allen was a sure win and he blew it and in so doing cost Republicans the Senate. He showed himself to be an inept campaigner. "Tim, I just made that word up. Never heard it before." That was one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard a politician make.
There's nothing faulty with my thought process. You might want to re-examine yours.

I don't like Romney (will wait and see) but I will never vote for McCain.

I call foul. You can't have it both ways. Pick one.
In fact, Cheney didn't help there anyway. He'd moved to Texas. For election purposes, he switched residency back to Wyoming. But Bush was going to get Wyoming, one of the three all-Red states, anyway.

88, not 92, but nevertheless, I concur. Reagan wasn't very fond of Bush at all. He was pressured by the establishment to pick their guy but it proved to be one of the worst decisions of his presidency.

I guess it's "woe is me" day on Free Republic. ("We're doomed!")
If what you say is true, how did Ronald Reagan win in 1980 and 1984? The MSM was even more powerful then than it is today.
We just have to find true Reagan conservatives (preferably governors) who are willing to run. THAT'S our big problem, not the MSM.

ACU detailed votes
It's a mixed bag. On ACU's ratings, he got 20 in 2004 and again in 2005, 21 for his career (7 years). Voted against Bush judges repeatedly. Some more conservative votes though too. The most conservative Dim is Nelson who hit 60 on ACU this year.
Biden is the next most conservative in the Dim prez hopefuls. His record is about like Chafee's was (12-14 ACU). All the other Dims are under ten, more like five. Feingold makes a steady 12-13. And Hitlery has a career 9 but a 12 in 2005.
