Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony -

Saturday, December 2, 2006 (12-02) 12:37 PST San Francisco (AP) --

The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military. Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee. Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said. Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said. Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard." Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.

As it should be, since the ship will be homeported there. It's home is San Diego, it's being built in Mississippi, why on Earth would they want to commission it in San Francisco?

"Concern" and "concerned" are the two most overused words in the English language these days. Everything is either a concern or someone is concerned about something. Of course I guess I can expect that from a nation of hand-wringers.

Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.SF is still a republic form of government, the people elect officials to represent them.

Obviously the views of the political leaders are the majority view of the people, the people who count.

The school board and city council both are institutes that are local controlled and can politically swayed by the voice of the people.

The people failed. The navy is right, they should bug out completely.

The city council and county commissars along with SanFran Nan needs to call up the city militant homosexuals SS corp to defend SF.

These "leaders" were elected by a "majority of Bay Area citizens."

...not every San Franciscan, or Bay Arean, is a liberal. There are several freepers from San Francisco, and many from the Bay Area who are definitely not leftists.

True, but the place is overrun with the most psychotic people I have ever seen. We need to redeploy...

"So, if your neighbors voted for such things, although you didn't, you would consider yourself to be fair game for alqaeda?"

No, but I'd go for new neighbors.

"As stated in an earlier comment, not every San Franciscan, or Bay Arean, is a liberal. There are several freepers from San Francisco, and many from the Bay Area who are definitely not leftists."

Agreed there are some great left coast patriots. However we are a republic correct? If the majority there do not want to be protected and have voted as such then their wishes should be honored.

Yes! If one takes one's position upon the bullseye of a target, can one not reasonably expect incoming projectiles? If you live among cockroaches, do you expect to be exempt from the exterminator? Else, why was Lot and his family removed from Sodom?

San Diego, where the USN is deeply embedded in the city's culture, would be a much more logical choice.

I hope you are right. I hope the military pulls out of SF all together (no pun intended). Can't wait to see the look in Pelosi's botoxed face when that happens.

I forgot she represents SF. LOL,Sweet. On a more serious note, I wonder who she is going to be seeking revenge on for this one.

If the "citizens" of Gay Bay didn't approve of the views of their political leaders, they'd remove them from office. The lack of opposition to the politicians views means the citizens are complicit.

Interesting. I was stationed on the USS Coral Sea (CVA 43)in the early 70's and we were homeported across the bay at Alameda NAS. The "Coral Maru" was designated as "San Francisco's Own" back in the 1940's or 1950's I believe, but by the time I was aboard that concept was largely ignored by the city.

Semper Fi,

unless SF is REALLY different from the rest of the US, those elected officials were put there by "the majority" of its citizens. Let them live with it or vote them out. THEN the Navy can talk to them.
