Theresa Marie Schindler was born to Robert and Mary Schindler on December 3, 1963. She was the first of three children the Schindlers would have.

Terri was a shy, but comical, child who had an affinity for music, animals and the arts. She kept a small circle of friends and was dear to schoolmates, neighboring families and her own extended family.

Following high school, Terri came into her own. She developed a knack for sketching and doodling. She enjoyed outings with her friends. She was an adoptive mother to the family’s dog, Bucky.

Terri attended Catholic School while growing up and remained close to her faith throughout her life.

In 1983, Terri met Michael Schiavo at Bucks County Community College and the two began dating. He was the first romantic interest Terri had.

The couple was engaged within a few months and married a year later at Terri’s church in Southampton, Pa. She was 21.

In 1986, Terri and Michael relocated to Pinellas County, Florida and her parents followed three months later.

In 1990, at the age of 26, Terri suffered a mysterious cardio-respiratory arrest for which no cause has ever been determined. She was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy – neurological injury caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Terri was placed on a ventilator, but was soon able to breathe on her own and maintain vital function. She remained in a severely compromised neurological state and was provided a PEG tube to ensure the safe delivery of nourishment and hydration.

On March 31, 2005, Terri Schindler Schiavo died of marked dehydration following more than 13 days without nutrition or hydration under the order of Circuit Court Judge, George W. Greer of the Pinellas-Pasco’s Sixth Judicial Court. Terri was 41.

I was looking through some bookmarks of mine. It was JUDGE WHITTEMORE who refused Terri ANY WATER while he was pretending to be holding hearings on whether Terri would win or lose.

He dehydrated and starved her, then ruled against her. Judge Whittemore is just as evil as Greer - both defiant and both still have their cushy jobs.

Terry Shiavo? The military commissions act of 2006 authorizes the government to "shiavo" every American Citizen - and then some. Under this act any Citizen can be declared an enemy combatant: no bill of rights; no habeas corpus; evidence obtained through torture and hearsay evidence are admissible; secret death penalty and execution, and no phone call! My favorite part of the bill is the "guantanamo plank" in sec. 10 which reads: Section 1005 of the detainee treatment act of 2005 is amended by striking 'the department of defense at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba' and inserting 'the United States'. Remembering Terri Schiavo

Not only did the mainstream media almost exclusively misrepresent the facts of Terri Schiavo's case, it turned the dialogue away from the dignity and inherent right to life of an innocent disabled woman to that of justifying the killing people with disabilities.

Nevermind that no one except her estranged "husband" and his relatives ever claimed her alleged wish to die. But what of the broader question? What does the tragic end of Terri's fight for life have to say about how people with disabilities are to be treated in this country?

The callousness with which Terri was killed seems to say that we believe that a life that is less than perfect is not worth living. Yet, as if to bring us back to the real issue, this year a case of a man in a condition strinkingly similar to that of Terri Schiavo (his name is Terry, too) appeared ever so briefly in the press. After 19 years, Terry Wallis suddenly emerged from a "persistent vegetative state" only to start speaking and tell his family that he loves them and that he is "proud to be alive."

Given the enormous media attention of Schiavo's case, I believe that hearing more about cases like Terry Wallis' will help our country to realize what was ignored from the beginning, that Terri Schiavo's case was less about a family dispute, than it was about a woman's right to live her life until her natural death.

The voices of those with disabilities have still yet to be heard regarding Terri Schiavo's brave fight, not to mention how her court sanctioned death may now be a fate others with disabilities may someday have to endure, given that Terri's case has repeatedly been called "the Roe v. Wade of euthanasia."

You included Terri Schiavo on your list for 2005. Her story continues to be one of the most covered-up cases in modern American journalism.

While the mainstream media has no qualms about misusing her name in order to denigrate every politician who had the courage to stand up for her in 2005, their continued refusal to report the actual facts of her case is ridiculous at best.

At the end of every story reporting progress in treating or understanding severe brain injuries and PVS they tack on the now cliche "of course this would not have helped Terri Schiavo." Either every mainstream journalist in America is a closet expert on brain injuries and PVS diagnoses, or they are attempting to justify their complicity in Terri's death. I'm guessing it is the latter.

The silver lining in Terri's tragic story is that more families have realized the critical importance of actively advocating for loved ones who are medically vulnerable and in danger of being euthanized.

The continuing tragedy is that people like Terri are being starved and dehydrated to death routinely in hospitals, hospices and nursing homes around our nation at a rate not seen since the Nazi T4 program exterminated hundreds of thousands of "useless eaters" at the beginning of World War II.

This is a story that should be shouted from the rooftops, but is instead being quietly swept under tidy newsdesks.

Whittemore not only understands the possibility of flawed rulings from a state, he also rejected the Congress suggestion that he do so. As many know, he was chatting with people on the Internet during this time holding he finger to the wind.

Media secular humanist whoredom doesn't feel a need to justify their wrongdoing because they believe the readers/listeners are stupid to give any human status to Terri. Since you are so smart, why don't you explain about the Schindler's living arrangement with Michael because it still baffles me. Because Micheal was a deadbeat. Does that answer your question?

Surely you are not trying to imply that the Schindlers paid for Schiavo's housing. During this time period the Schindlers did not make one house payment nor did they pay their property taxes. The lender paid the taxes and eventually foreclosed. The Schindlers stall tactics prolonged the period for 22 months.

You don't suppose?? Mel Gibson was distressed over Terri and I wonder if some of the battle of good versus evil spilled into his thinking as he worked on the film. Not having seen it yet, I have no idea. But Mel Gibson is a traditional Catholic and Terri must have had an effect on him.

Haleigh Poutre Update...

This news item just appeared at 4:00am today. Again The Republican in Massachusetts broke the story.

WESTFIELD - The grandmother of child-abuse victim Haleigh Poutre, angered over the state's refusal to allow family members to visit her, said yesterday she will take her cause to the Statehouse on Monday morning.

Sandra L. Sudyka, of the Feeding Hills section of Agawam, said the state Department of Social Services has not allowed family members to visit Haleigh at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston since July 18.

A Suffolk County Superior Court judge, acting on emergency injunctions filed by Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, ruled in October she would not force the state to restore hospital visiting privileges.

But Sudyka said it's not right to keep Haleigh isolated from her family, especially as Christmas approaches.

"It is cruel and abusive," Sudyka said.

Sudyka said she and Susan Molina, executive director of the Whitman-based Yellow Ribbon Kids Club, will go to the Statehouse on Monday to ask legislators to do what they can to restore visitation.

"We are going door to door," Sudyka said.

Sounds like DSS still just doesn't get it and never will even if slapped upside the head. I am once again fascinated by that date, 9-11.

DSS has had custody of Haleigh since Sept. 11, 2005, when her adoptive mother and stepfather, Holli A. and Jason D. Strickland, brought her to Noble Hospital with injuries, including severe trauma to her head, for which they were later charged.

Holli Strickland, Avrett's sister, was shot and killed on Sept. 22, 2005, in an apparent murder-suicide at the hands of her grandmother, police said.

Although doctors reported that the battered and emaciated Haleigh was in a vegetative state with little or no hope for recovery, she has been improving and can eat and communicate on her own, officials have said.

Sudyka has said that during their June and July visits, Haleigh spoke several words and clearly relished their time together.

DSS officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
