Attack: A teenage surfer was rescued yesterday from the jaws of a great white shark by his older brother, but not before the five-metre predator bit off part of Zach Golebiowski's leg. The 15-year-old was attacked off a WA beach by a shark thought to be similar to the one above.

BTW, I've noticed that USA so far this year is staved off shark and hurricane attacks.

And what would it take to have the serious predators like saltwater crocodiles, great white sharks etc. - go extinct? A few stuffed specimens could be kept in a museum.

Beautiful big Mako. You can tell by the blueish sheen to his skin and the narrow snout.

Ughh...I hope this thread is going to be free of the "Wipe sharks off the face of the Earth because I liked the movie 'Jaws' and I think sharks are scary" people.

If I read the article correct he was only 120 feet offshore.
OTH, At some beaches 120' offshore gives plenty enough depth for a shark that size to range in.
I could never quite relax with the image of a Tiger Shark that might be lurking underneath when surfing and windsurfing out in Maui.

If I read the article correct he was only 120 feet offshore. Hawaii huh? Lucky you!
I live off the New England Coast, we had a nasty suprise on Cape Cod this summer:
On Lighthouse Beach, witnesses said they saw a 15-foot great white spring from the water and devour a seal swimming about 50 feet off shore. Officials could not confirm that a shark had entered shallow waters.
50 feet is about the length of two school buses from shore!
The Cape Cod Shark attack is on my blog "The Hairy Beast": Cape Cod Massachusetts: Too many seals and Great Whites, now!, along with other White Shark attack articles.

Pardon me, but this week a "killer whale" acted like a killer. I am shocked! We all know they are just like us and if evil people did nothing to provoke them they would just be nice!

They can't survive in any type of captivity. No one knows why, since most other species can.

Wow a 15 footer only 50' offshore.
Now this must be important because the experts seem to remind us of this all the time, and that is when a great white or tiger attacks and eats you, he is only mistaking you for something else that he usually eats.
Only problem with that hypothesis is that the sharks mistake pretty much everything for something he usually eats and the latest copy of 'expert daily' hasn't got the word to them yet /sarc>

I think that keeping Orcas in tiny pools like that must be torture for them.
