SAN FRANCISCO: Navy scuttles plan to commission warship here, citing local politics
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12-02-06 | Carl Nolte

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans to commission the Makin Island, the Navy's newest and most powerful warship, in San Francisco in 2008 because of a perception that the city is anti-military.

Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of a high-powered committee that was to support a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island, said he has been informed that the ship would not be commissioned in San Francisco, as scheduled, but in San Diego.

Myatt said he had been told that the Navy was concerned about San Francisco's refusal to provide a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, and for the city school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in San Francisco high schools.

One of the factors that turned the Pentagon against San Francisco, he said, was widely quoted anti-military remarks made by various city politicians. Some of the remarks got considerable attention, especially ones made by Gerardo Sandoval, a member of the Board of Supervisors, who was quoted on national television as saying national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard.''

wonder what the cops are going to use when china invades?
---
When the Chinese invade they will not have the proper parade permits, so police will take them into custody.

Furthermore the tanks will not have proper state license plates and city stickers.

The fines and penalties will just skyrocket.

However, I do believe that San Francisco is a sanctuary city, so the Chinese soldiers will not have to worry about being detained as illegal aliens. They will be vulnerable on unlicensed weapons charges and criminal mischief to property.

I guess that's tolerance...!

They're only tolerant of one another and their lifestyle and thankfully the majority of the people in our country are not tolerant of either. They are not going to be accepted in the manner they want to be, IMO. This refusal to let the USS Makin Island be commissioned in San Francisco is but a small indication of that.

Well, YEH, very perceptive. Pigeons coming home to roost. Nice to see consequences. This is a great decision. Give the money to San Diego where they support the troops.

Sounds as if the Navy has found out about SF.

The pansy doesn't even realize that his (her?) disdain of the forces which protect him keeps the very evil that would surely execute his sorry ass were it in charge... His Muslim 'brothers' take a very dim view of buggering another man up the keester...

Great move!!!

However, if I were King, I would pull ALL military assets out of every single blue state.

As a side benefit, it might help us redirect the terrorists target interests.

I would also pull ALL federal funding from those states and let the losers be all that they can be.....alone.

Exactly!...And maybe the decent citizens of the bay area will start taking their communities back through the ballot box.

"The effort now is to move the USS Iowa to Mare Island, near Vallejo."

With enhanced munitions and 16" guns would they need to get that close?

Just for giggles, the Navy should try to commission a ship named the "USS Harvey Milk" in San Francisco. It would be fun to watch the locals' heads explode from the cognitive dissonance.

"...how those dudes got homo-smeared when that turret on the USS New Jersey suddenly blew up.

It wasn't the USS New Jersey that had the turret blow up. It was indeed the USS Iowa.

Im interested to see if Fleet Week is cancelled for 2007. The Blue Angels pulled out of Fleet Week 2005 because of bad comments toward the military and the Navy itself by the SF Chronicle. SF business were livid and begged the NAVY to bring back the Blue Angels. It'll suck personally but I'm hoping that the NAVY cancels Fleet Week altogether. Screw SF. Hit em where it counts, the pocketbook.

McGoo and Miramar still pack in the audiences, another show down here wouldn't be all that bad.

And, it's only 400 or so miles from 'frisco.

(By this time, Long Beach would probably welcome some visitation)

With no military in Frisco in years, a stupid idea to commission the ship there.

Here in San Diego is the majority of the military, Navy and Marines anyways.

Not to mention Hamilton Field and, best/worst of all, the Presidio.

Just damn.
