Forner is a well-known Marxist Historian. He sees History as a matter of following the buck, or viewing events through the lens of class warfare.

Naturally, he's not going to think much of President Bush.

When all is said and done, through it might be fifty years, Bush will be with the near-greats: Truman, Polk, Eisenhower, and Jackson.

Standing up to the radicals in the Middle East was not easy; especially with ninety percent of the media running the effort down 24/7.

History will validate the effort.

Before I hit that link, I knew that the word "Carter" was not in that editorial.

Eric Foner? Hey, someone put a "r" at the end of his name where the "y" should be.

The worst thing is that this idiot is a professor at Columbia university, indoctrinating the students.

"Eric Foner is DeWitt Clinton professor of history at Columbia University."

I can't understand why they consider Buchanan a failure. He was President during the war against Mexico and we gained a lot of geography (maybe that's not considered a good thing any more).

While I disagree that Bush is one of the worst ever, I would rate him much lower than I would have two years ago. If he makes enough dealer with Dirty Harry and Ms. Nancy, it's possible he could drop into the lower tier in my ranking system (but probably would be better regarded by historians).

This type of "ranking" tells us more about the author than about the particular president.

Bush has taken this disdain for law even further. He has sought to strip people accused of crimes of rights that date as far back as the Magna Carta in Anglo-American jurisprudence: trial by impartial jury, access to lawyers and knowledge of evidence against them. In dozens of statements when signing legislation, he has asserted the right to ignore the parts of laws with which he disagrees.

Uh, yeah, right. The Presidents considered "great" never did such a thing. I mean, can you imagine President Lincoln just blowing off the Constitution?

I don't care what anyone says.

Our greatest President was, without a doubt, William Henry Harrison.

Is Eric Foner the worst history professor ever? He has my vote. Making a judgement so early in the game, in like the first quarter. At the same point if this were 1863 with Lincoln he would be the worst president ever.

Yes worse than Carter..then man that gave us the Iranian problem we have today. The man that killed the economy and shot our image in the world. And that incidnt with the Killer Rabbit...
And Bush is also worse than Clinton. The man who slept thru 8 years and thereby advoiding doing anything to prevent the Muslim terrorist threat. Clinton was a joke of a Pres. Who gave us " It depends on the defintion of "is" Is"
And, if the truth be told, Clinton is the Man on whose the blood of countless Americans has on his hands. His selling of missle secrets to the Red Chinese are the stuff that legands are made of. The way he deftly advoiding catching OBL, thereby making 911 happen. And who can forget the way he hit that Asprin factory and the empty terrorist training site. Yes Clinton was the greatest President----- that our enemies ever had.

scholars consider Reconstruction a flawed but noble attempt

I know a few old timers from the Pineywoods of E. Texas that called Reconstruction the Northern Occupation.

Don't you just love "polls?"

His example of the Reconstruction era polls is a prime example of skewing polls, though. If Southerners had been polled, any doubts the results would list Lincoln as the worst?

Even in the 50s in the South (where I grew up) Lincoln was still considered a dirty name.

Polk was an excellent President - he set goals and achieved virtually all of them - from the inclusion of Texas, to the settling of the Oregon border to lowering taxes.

Coolidge and Harding are severely underrated, in my opinion.

"Bush has taken this disdain for law even further. He has sought to strip people accused of crimes of rights that date as far back as the Magna Carta..."

The man just toppled two horrific and brutal totalitarian regimes and in the process liberated 51 million people from oppression! Geee... those people stripped of their rights are called TERRORISTS!

"Despite some notable accomplishments in domestic and foreign policy, Nixon is mostly associated today with disdain for the Constitution and abuse of presidential power. Obsessed with secrecy and media leaks, he viewed every critic as a threat to national security and illegally spied on U.S. citizens. Nixon considered himself above the law."

This is what David P. Schippers (a former Democrat Chicago prosecutor), Chief Investigative Counsel for the Clinton Impeachment wrote, in his book SELLOUT The Inside Story of President Clinton's Impeachment:

"The Democratic players in the impeachment drama certainly aren't going to thump their chests. After all, what would they say? 'Yeah, we knew the President was a serial felon who made Richard Nixon look like a Boy Scout, but we don't care.' And the Republicans couldn't do much better. 'Yeah, we knew he was subverting the Constitution, too, but some of us were too scared to tie our own shoes.'"

My point here, is that these alleged "historians" do not care to print the truth about anyone; not those they hate; and certain not those they love! This article is just one more reflection of the utter dishonesty in journalism today!

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

So don't listen to his garbage! Sneak up behind him and say "Boo!" and his diaper would fill up! How dare that asshat talk about our President like that! I just emailed the prick!

The next Democrat elected President will be the worst in U.S. history.

This is very troubling.

As far as presidents before my time, I can only go by what history says. However, I can rate who I consider to be the best and worst presidents in my 40+ years of life. I believe the best president (in my lifetime) was Ronald Reagan. He was very dedicated to keeping America strong. I believe the worst president (in my lifetime) was William Clinton. He made a mockery of the presidency and of this country.

This guy is a good enemy to have.

By "people" he OBVIOUSLY means foreign terrorists. Typical liberal double speak.

Hey, Foner. American jurisprudence 1) applies only to American citizens and 2) does not extend outside our borders.

Go on and get arrested iside a muslim country ruled by Sharia laws. See if you have any rights under their laws or ours.
