President Bush has signed the 'Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act,' which expands criminal prohibitions against the use of force, violence, and threats involving animal enterprises and increases penalties for violations of these prohibitions.
As defined by the bill, 'animal enterprises' include commercial and academic enterprises that use or sell animals or animal products for profit, food, agriculture, education, research and testing. This definition also includes equine activities such as rodeo, horse shows and similar lawful equine events.
Sponsored by Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), this bill amends the Animal Enterprise Act of 1992. The American Horse Council was a major supporter of that legislation and worked hard with other industry groups to make sure that the final legislation protected horse events.
The Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent in September, just prior to the Congressional recess. A similar bill, H.R. 4239, was approved by the House of Representatives this month.
Is this the crazy bill that says we can't sell horses for food to foreign countries?
Stupid law. I'd be the first to send eco-terrorists to Gitmo but this is already covered by existing terrorism laws and simple laws against the destruction of private property.
This law covers those nutcases that post peoples' addresses on line, along with their kids' school adresses, where the spouse works, credit histories, SS numbers, etc.
These are the extremists who try to intimidate these companies from doing the work they do. It's about time.
Here in the Bay Area, we had these thugs go after Chiron and all their employees. What a nightmare for them.
Pretty soon every law will be related to terrorism somehow. Want to shut down development of a shopping center? Just say it will terrorise the ducks flying by overhead. Badda-Bing! No shopping center!
I think this bill is about animal rights moonbats who do things like throw rocks through the living room windows of researchers who work with animals, break into labs and steal the monkeys, that sort of thing.
I await future administrations abuse of Bush's precedents with morbid anticipation.
Each act you described is covered by existing law.
Does this in any way affect Viking Kitties?
Well, at least the animals are SECURED and PROTECTED.
The new law increases the penalties for existing crimes. It may add some new stuff related to some of the tactics animal rights activits have come up with, I don't know.
Freespirited is correct. The penalties are enhanced.
