Behind the scenes, Kerry apparently has been having doubts, calling current and former Democratic confidantes to inquire just how much his gaffe hurt his presidential chances, according to several Democrats who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversations were private.
Kerry, who turns 63 later this month, had been planning to announce a comeback campaign in December or January. He had thrown himself into helping his party reclaim Congress in the midterm election, campaigning for roughly 80 House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates.

Nonetheless, Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, hope to boost their public reemergence with a book about the environment slated for publication next April. \

They're still floating that
botched joke meme? I tell you what, Kerry is a botched joke! In fact he is a pompous, arrogant, vain, thin-skinned blue-blood with no sense of his own ridiculousness*!

Taking Kerry at his word, that his "botched joke" was an attempt to insult President Bush rather than the troops in Iraq, it's at the level of playground humor, where one kid calls another an insulting name and thinks it's very funny.
Kerry can't figure out why the rest of the country wasn't rolling on the floor laughing with him rather than at him.

Arrogance and stupidity have no bounds with that loser.
The biggest favor he can offer is to put another microphone in front of his wife.

What part of 'botched joke' is it that Kerry cannot seem to understand?
Botched jokes are by definition unfunny, irrelevant and border on being downright boorish. Apologies for this sort of behavior have the extraordinary trait of being unacceptable, especially when the apologist tries to retell the joke. The joke is still not funny, but then it takes on the edge of being just mean-spirited.
