The Nation's Pulse: Bad Girls Go Out
American Spectator Magazine ^ | Published 11/30/2006 12:07:10 AM | Carol Platt Liebau

Perhaps youthful celebrities like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan are more to be pitied than blamed. Certainly, one branch of their education has been sadly neglected: No one has ever taught them how young ladies climb out of vehicles -- knees together, both legs lifted simultaneously, torso swiveled, feet placed firmly on the pavement.

In recent days, this oversight has evolved into something of a public spectacle. Websites devoted to celebrity gossip have featured plenty of pictures of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan climbing out of cars.

The problem is this: Young women like Lohan and Spears are, in fact, serving as role models to girls all over the United States. A poll conducted last year by Teenage Research Unlimited found that Lindsay Lohan was the person most envied by teen girl respondents.

What's most remarkable is the deafening silence from the larger culture that has greeted the antics of the young starlets.

It's hardly admirable that adult males say nothing about the exhibitionism, but perhaps it's understandable; while they may not respect young women like Lohan and Spears, the visuals are doubtless intriguing. But older women who fail to speak out about why Spears' and Lohan's behavior is inappropriate and wrong become complicit in it on a much deeper level.

By their silence, they are allowing little girls (like they once were) to absorb the destructive message that vulgarity is the same as sexiness, that exhibiting oneself to be stared at or drooled over like a prime cut of meat constitutes "empowerment," and that it's "cool" to flaunt one's sexuality indiscriminately, rather than sharing it with a man who's shown he's interested in more than just another female body.

They know darned well how to get out of a car. That's not a lack of education; it's a lack of common decency on their part.

I'd say it's a lack of sobriety amoung other things.

It is so blatant that one would think it was planned.
That's how they do it in Brit's old trailer park I suppose.

Can I use a mace?

I'm not sure she's into the rough stuff, and I don't think her butt needs tenderizing. Maybe you should go to the back of the line.

Britney Spears has not put out a decent song since her first album nearly a decade ago. Why does anyone still care?

Yeah, maybe so. I just wasn't expecting to see what I saw and it really caught me off guard. But those pics are far from attractive in any way imo.

"It's hardly admirable that adult males say nothing about the exhibitionism, but perhaps it's understandable; while they may not respect young women like Lohan and Spears,"

So she wants me to call Britney a whore, but she also accuses me of not respecting her...

"But older women who fail to speak out about why Spears' and Lohan's behavior is inappropriate and wrong become complicit in it on a much deeper level."

Older women understand that pretty young women need to use themselves a little, and that it won't last forever.

This whole piece reeks of a jealous, wench step-mother. She really needs to mind her own business if she doesn't like what others do.

I think there is plenty of room here to blame BS for the photos. The skirt is incredibly short, no underwear...photogs everywhere. It's a wardrobe malfunction waiting to be caught on film.

But I'd also blame the photographers who hound these people, clicking away looking for the money shot and the audience (celeb watchers).

I don't believe I've ever had to worry about my private parts being photographed getting out of a car but I am thankful that I'm not such a target. Bad hair day, wedgies, bra strap fell down, socks don't match, toilet paper hanging off the shoe. If it happens, strangers just roll their eyes and forget it. THe photos aren't sold and posted all over the www.

Is that what we do here on FR? Do we mind our business when somebody does something we don't like? I thought we tried to use, among other things, persuasion to bring about positive change.

The fact that she is hanging out with Paris says it all.

I got nothing against older women, being an older man. But I know a lot of older women, and they sure are fans of "Sex in the City" and "Desperate Housewives".

Criticizing these young bimbos while fantasizing you're getting it on with some guy in his 20s does seem a little hypocritical.

"...shaving ALL their body hair?..."

An old gypsy tradition that caught on. I would wager that 40 percent or more of American women (ages 20 to 40) shave ALL their hair down there nowadays.

My mother's (circa 1936) OB for nurses text showed how to shave there. Now the med types say it is an unnecesseary procedure for the delivery room but half the moms arrive that way anyway.
