Democrats to offer permanent tax cut
Washington Times ^ | 12-1-06 | Charles Hurt

Democrats have long attacked President Bush for the historic tax cuts he ushered through Congress during his first term and have promised to reverse at least some of them. But among their top priorities when they take over Congress next month is passing a permanent tax cut of their own. Included in their "Six for '06" platform that they say helped them win majorities in the House and Senate, Democrats promised to: "Make college tuition deductible from taxes, permanently." Their tax cut promise is neither an election-year gimmick, Democrats say, nor a reversal in their long-standing opposition to Mr. Bush's tax cuts. "Democrats have made it clear that the middle class will be our priority and making college more affordable is a key concern of working families," said incoming House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat. They have been less clear, however, about their plans for other tax cuts that expire in 2010 and or how to raise the revenue required to institute the "pay-go" rules they have promised. Those rules prohibit adding any new spending to the budget or cutting taxes unless there is money in the budget.

So the poor folks who cannot afford 5-figure tuitions every year get to subsidize those who can.
Brilliant!
Rats.

I predict that college tuitions will rise in direct proportion to the tax breaks.

Any takers?

Democrats are fools. It's like having the Delta House fraternity run the country.

Tuition is ridiculously high so the universities can get a lot more from the government for those affirmative action admissions, illegals going to college, etc.

Making a deduction "permanent" is one of the biggest attempted scams I have seen. Nothing is permanent with politicians, even "entitlements."

That's not a real tax cut, that's the old style social engineering and subsidies in the form of tax credits. What's wrong with those who work straight out of high school, dont they get a break? And what about those who pay for K-12 education, dont they get a break? Why not? Their plan is highly discriminatory on many levels. Let's have a tuition tax credit for *ALL* education expenses.

Failing that, remember the real tax reform is lower rates and/or no IRS: We need lower tax rates. Anything else is a gimmick.

Reagan passed away.

for the right to succeed, in an environment where the mainstream media is totally against their message, you need an articulate leader, who is on message all the time about the ills of liberalism, and has the power to communicate and change the opinions of people.

No fair. Evidence points to this already happening.

To make a college degree more affordable, the President has provided the largest increase in Pell grant funding in the history of the program and has increased by one million the number of students receiving this assistance.

U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today unveiled the Higher Education Opportunity through Pell Grant Expansion or HOPE Act, to help make college more affordable for thousands of Illinois families (March 28, 2005)

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today said that the tax bill signed by President Bush yesterday contains a new college tuition tax deduction to help New York families pay for college. (June 7, 2001)

Is free good enough? I help disadvantaged kids get into college. They get Chafee grants ($5000) per year, Pell grants ($5000 per year), Board of Governors grants for tuition and 10% off books and campus purchases. All they need is a job for spending money. Trouble is, too few can discipline themselves to study; get caught up in the social life and flunk out. Maybe a personal attendant to attend their classes, do their homework, and take their tests would help! Really though, for those motivated, college in California is damn near free for disadvantaged kids. I only wish more of them would take advantage of the opportunity!
