First President to take oath on Bible? (history question)
11-30-2006 | Susannah

Posted on 11/30/2006 8:06:56 PM PST by Susannah

Does anyone here know who was the first to take an oath of office with his hand on the Bible?

Is it a something that congress voted in favor of at some time? How and when did the practice begin for all of congress?

I'm on two other bi-partisan political forums and would appreciate some info to respond to those types of questions.

Would also like to know if there are any atheists in congress. I'm sure there are some not practicing their faith, but what about actual atheists?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't George Washington. OTOH, I've been surprised before.

April 30, 1789 -- George Washington April 30, 1789 -- George Washington Pronounced the words, "So help me God" after taking the oath; other presidents have followed this example. Set the precedent of kissing the Bible after the oath.

"Would also like to know if there are any atheists in congress."

On September 11th, 2001, the number of atheists in Congress is reputed to have been zero.

Bernie Sanders, newly elected senator from Vermont, formerly a congressman, is an atheist.
