Iraqi PM Al-Maliki Tells Bush, Rice It's No 'Big Deal' to Control Mahdi Army

AMMAN, Jordan — President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressed the Iraqi prime minister on Thursday to disband a heavily armed Shiite militia blamed for much of the country's sectarian violence and were told by Nouri al-Maliki that controlling the group was no "big deal."

Bush and Rice repeatedly probed al-Maliki on his plans to deal with the Mahdi Army militia loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the aide said.

"It is not a big problem and we will find a solution for it," the official quoted al-Maliki as telling Bush.

Al-Sadr is a key al-Maliki political backer and the prime minister has regularly sidestepped U.S. demands that the cleric's militia be disbanded.

At a news conference after their meetings, Bush declined to answer a question about the al-Sadr issue and deferred to al-Maliki.

LOL. That's what the Cowboys' kicker, Vanderjagdt, kept telling the coach as he continued to miss field goals: "it's not big deal." They fired him two days ago.

Sadr should have been iced 3 years ago. This has become a royal screw up.

Yes, if there was ever a reason to walk out of Iraq, this loser of a so-called leader is it. This guy is playing both sides against the middle.

Yup. Right on the button! We should still ace this creep.

Oh, there'll be hell to pay for it now, as opposed to a few years ago when Sadr wasn't as well armed and had fewer followers. But the man needs to go to his reward or Iraq will never have a chance as a stable and civil society.

Al-Maliki,meanwhile, is playing Bush and Rice on this question.

Yes, this is why I can't stand Maliki.

Allawi however was totally upfront, pro-Western, and wanted to put a bullet in Sadr's head but the State Dept wouldn't let him.

Agreed, and we should make it clear that the same thing will happen to anyone who dares to take his place.

I believe it was Sistani who protected Sadr... the State Department may have supported Sistani but that's the guy who protected Sadr and reeled him in. Sadr is one big a-hole but he's not the only a-hole that has to be dealt with there.
