Three Texans among five kidnapped from Mexico ranch near border

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico U-S and Mexican authorities say three men from Texas and two Mexican citizens were kidnapped from a hunting ranch near the U-S border over the weekend. Witnesses told police that 30 to 40 armed men entered the La Barranca ranch late Sunday and took the five men away.

F-B-I spokesman Erik Vasys says the American victims are:

-- 49-year-old Librado Pina Junior of Laredo,

-- his son, 25-year-old Librado Pina the Third of Laredo

-- and 45-year-old David Mueller of the Sweetwater area.

The ranch is located near the Coahuila town of Hidalgo, about 40 miles northwest of Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo.

Santos Vasquez Estrada, the local head of the Coahuila state attorney general's office, says the elder Pina owned the ranch.

The ranch's cook, Marco Ortiz, was also kidnapped.

Mueller and Fidel Rodriguez Cerdan, of Monterrey, Mexico, were apparently on a hunting trip at the ranch.

Vasquez Estrada says the kidnappers do not appear to have made any ransom demand.

Vasys said American authorities are working closely with their Mexican counterparts in the investigation.

What do you think? If three Americans are kidnapped in Iraq, we generally hear about it. Have you heard, next to Iraq, Mexico is now the most dangerous place on earth for journalists. 7 of them murdered this year down there.

The ranch is located near the Coahuila town of Hidalgo, about 40 miles northwest of Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo.

One more reason why J-school students shouldn't be allowed to ply their craft: they don't understand geography.

"40 miles northwest of Nuevo Laredo" would NOT be "across the border from Laredo".

For those confused by the article, the dateline (Piedras Negras, Mexico) is across the river from Eagle Pass (not Laredo).

You would think that, given the journalistic imperative of "getting it right", they could at least get that right.

Still can't figure out why anyone would want to go into the hornets nest called Mexico.

This overkill "kidnapping" makes me wonder if there's drug money involved. Just another day in corrupt Mexico.

Reading stories like this should make Americans cringe in fear to know that if GWBush's plan of "merging" America with Mexico and Canada succeeds, this is what we'll have in our back yards.

The talking heads are talking about the "North American Union" now, and some wonder WHY this "North American Union" doesn't even require the consent of our Senate or House. WE, the taxpaying citizens of America, don't even get a vote on it!!

I think we're living under a GWB & Co. dictatorship.

Yes, it's certainly nice to be able to decide which laws you want to enforce. There was a nice article today about the tens of thousands of illegals from "countries of interest" that have been released back into our population.

I thought we were fighting them over there, so we didn't have to fight them over here?

Makes it hard to take the Iraq war seriously, since security sure doesn't seem to be a big deal when it comes to defending the border.

Hogwash

You consider what Phyllis Schlafly, a patriotic conservative, writes about the North American Union hogwash?

And she is not the only one, plenty are noticing, and not liking the trend.

Why is this story so hogwash? These type of stories would put a severe cramp on Bush's plan for a North American Union. I've been told by an LA County Sheriff that is head of a crime division that kidnappings by Mexicans are already happening in the US. We don't hear about it because people are paying the ransom. Aren't open borders great! Vote Constitution/American Independent party before it is to late.

The journalist are correct. Piedras Negras in across the border of Laredo in the state of Coahuila. There is also a Piedras Negras near Eagle Pass, but in a different state.

The Piedras Negras across from Eagle Pass is in the state of Coahuila.

If there is a Piedras Negras across from Laredo, it would be next to Nuevo Laredo -- and in the state of Tamaulipas.
