We Must Alter Soc Sec, Rangel Says (Cut Benefits, Raise Retirement Age)
New York Daily News ^ | November 29, 2006 | Celeste Katz

Raising retirement age or reducing benefits can't be ruled out if the Social Security system is to be saved from going bust, Rep. Charles Rangel said yesterday. "All of these things are on the table to find some way to make certain that Social Security is solvent," said Rangel, who is poised to take control of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.

Rangel (D-Harlem) discussed the fate of Social Security - which some have estimated will have a cash-flow problem as soon as 2017 and run out of money by 2040 - during a Manhattan breakfast talk sponsored by Crain's New York.

Any solution will cause some pain, according to Rangel. "If you call tax increases pain - and I do - that'll be a part of the mix, too," he said. "There's no easy way to do it, but it has to be done."

But the congressman also swore Social Security and Medicare health benefits would not be scrapped entirely. "If you're talking about getting rid of entitlements, forget about it," he said.

First Rangel alienates youths, now he alienates the elderly, this guy is the gift that keeps on giving.

Now America gets to see.

Everything the Democrats tried to scare Americans about, that the Republicans were gonna do..... every last one of them was what they planned to do, themselves.

It was the democrats who put the kibosh on social security reform after the 2004 election.

LOL... any "fix" for SS that doesn't include privatized accounts is worthless and even counter productive.

Rangel just proving he's as clueless about basic economics as he is on everything else.

This is pretty odd.

Of course, it will still be all Bush's fault.

What Charlie Rangel won't do is the obvious: privatize Social Security so people can have REAL retirement accounts. He just admitted Social Securiuty is a Ponzi scam when he talked of cutting benefits and raising the retirement age. What good is Social Security if you'll never live long enough to collect it?

notice...that the only solution a lib/dem ever has is to raise taxes and cuts benefits......

and one can bet that benefits to certain groups will not be touched!!!!!

the group most effected will be the white middle class baby boomers that have funded the program all these years as the lib/dems have squandered the money......

where is algore and his lock box the lib/dems were so approvingly supporting???

Baby Boomers will heartily endorse that plan!

When Bush wanted to overhaul the Social Security System, the democrats screamed and yelled that nothing was wrong with it. Interesting how those same democrats are singing a different song now.

How about we raise the ceiling on taxable income?

I believe it's only the first $90,000 that SS effects.

I could be wrong - but wasn't it the democrats in 2005 telling us that Social Security was NOT in jeopardy - that there was plenty of money??

Charlie Rangel is correct. Its either cut benefits, raise revenues or a combination of both, to make Social Security - not to mention Medicate and Medicaid, solvent.
