Democrats Revive Embryonic Stem Cell Bill

WASHINGTON - The same embryonic stem cell bill that prompted President Bush's only veto is headed to his desk again, this time from Democrats who have it atop their agenda when they take control of Congress in January.

It's uncertain whether supporters of the measure can muster enough votes to override another veto.

The bill, which would expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, is supported by a majority of Americans as a way to speed the search for possible cures for dozens of diseases. It is staunchly opposed by Bush and others who liken the process to abortion since it requires the destruction of human embryos.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said he would not "issue veto threats on hypothetical legislation" but added that Bush's position on the issue hasn't changed.

During the last session of Congress, the bill fell 51 votes short in the House of the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto, while Senate supporters needed four votes to get to the 67 required. Activists on both sides of the issue say new override votes would be cliffhangers.

One thing is sure: The new leaders of the House and Senate plan to pass the bill within weeks of gaveling open the 110th Congress in January in an attempt to either get Bush to sign it or force a presidential veto early in the lame-duck years of his presidency.

House Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi has queued up the bill for passage in the first 100 hours of business. The Senate could act on it before the first month is out

Wel, well, let's see how new "conservative" democrat Heathie Shuler votes on this. His vote will be needed for an override.

The democrat/pelosi hubris is coming out.

Please name one disease that it is proven to cure.

Once again the left blurrs the issue.
STEM CELL research is supported by most Americans - NOT embryonic stem sell research.

It's nothing but divisive grandstanding. The only reason they are pushing it is that they know Bush will veto it, and they want to use it as a wedge issue. Of course, the fact that Bush will not be on the ballot in 08 somewhat moots that strategy.

There will be plenty of Reps who will vote with the Dems. The only questions are will it be veto proof or will Bush even veto it? Shuler's vote won't be needed for passage. The Dems can allow some of their "moderate" freshmen to vote their conscience and burnish their image as "moderates."

The votes for passage are not important, the votes to override the veto will be.

But what the hey, Heath will vote the nancy line.

Bush is the first President to authorize federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. This proposed bill will expand the funds spent on it and the number of embryonic stem cell lines. The federal government already expends funds on embryonic stem cell research.

"Please name one disease that it is proven to cure."

Or.......prove that a "majority" of Americans support it.

The dems gained appx: 29 seats, they are still 22 votes short of overidding the veto, unless those "new democrat" conservatives vote the nancy line, as they probably will.

Please don't lie. Bush stopped Federal funding on new embryonic stem-cell research lines.

Sheesh you all in the Tancredo congressional office are desperate today.

It's called rationalization. People are accepting that abortion kills babies. They need a reason to continue to justify the killings.

They may not need Heath's vote to override it. The Senate passed the bill last time. 63-37 and the House tried to override the veto, but fell short, 235-193. This time around, the Senate will provide a veto proof majority and the only question is will the House. If the Dems can't find the votes, they will allow Heath to vote against it. They want the issue for the 2008 election and will target vulnerable Reps using it. McCaskill was successful at doing that with Talent. It is the Michael J. Fox strategy.

Now that the Dems control Congress and can set the agenda as to what can get voted on, look for them to select their value issues like minimum wage increases and stem cell research to get Reps on the record. They are doing the same thing we did with partial birth abortion, flag burning, gay marriage, etc.

I was not happy with the way he handled this either.
My understanding was that the bill allowed funding for research for the embryonic stem cells from children already killed but did not all any new embryos to be killed.

If my understanding is incorrect, please correct me.

Cordially,
GE

I am not a liar. You are wrong. Bush is the first President to authorize federal funding for embyronic stem cell research using existing lines. Here is an excerpt from a WH Press Release

"In 2001, I spoke to the American people and set forth a new policy on stem cell research that struck a balance between the needs of science and the demands of conscience. When I took office, there was no federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. Under the policy I announced five years ago, my administration became the first to make federal funds available for this research, yet only on embryonic stem cell lines derived from embryos that had already been destroyed."

Get your fact straight. You open border types are entitled to you own opinions, but not your own facts.

IMHO, ever democrat in the house and senate should try Embryonic Stem cell treatment if they really believe in it.

If they survive the thrashing around, cancers and tumors maybe they can prove they really are worth listening to.

Well le's see, they need 67 votes in the Senate to override a veto, who are he new democrats going to join in? Mckaskill, no doubt. Tester and Webb maybe(akthough they will have a tough time justifying their vote), that's 3. Casey jr. remmeber he's the "pro_life" democrat guy, but he will do anything harry tells him, and will vote for it(Pennsylvania voters, especially the "true conservatives who hated Santorum) all i can I say is "suckers", but Corker will vote against it, that leaves 2 democrat Senators.
