Environment Canada says such low temperatures unusual for this time of year.
The arctic deep freeze trapping Calgary is on track to break a 110-year-old weather record today, but the bitter cold is expected to ease in the coming days.
With a forecast low of -31C today, Calgary could break the -27C record set on this day in 1896.
But factoring in the wind chill, it will feel even colder to people who have to brave the elements, said Environment Canada meteorologist Ross Macdonald.
It's even been too frosty to ski, with Canada Olympic Park shutting the hill yesterday in the name of safety.
Spokesman Chris Dornan said, to his knowledge, it's the first year the weather has forced a November closure.

BTW, I was up on the hill above Summit road at noon, and it was still quite cold there, so don't expect to come home to indian summer tonight.
Yikes is right! We haven't gotten above 14 degrees here in the mountains of Colorado today...and our temps tonight predicted at -8....which is warm compared to Calgary.

Yes. Blizzard of December, 1971. I parallel parked on the icy road that bordered the uphill east side of the college football practice field. I got out of my VW beetle and slammed the door, the car immediately began to slide sideways off the glazed road and slid about 20 feet down the sloped lawn. A friend in a Chevy 4x deadweighted me back up sideways. It was like something out of a roadrunner cartoon. Glock rocks, super genius. |
I did a similar brain fart in 1967. I had driven from the SF Bay area to Tahoe, non-stop, so my tires were fairly warm even though the road was icy. I just pulled off Hwy 50 into the parking lot of Tahoe Paradise College, parked and left. The warm tires melted their way into the crust of ice that covered the lot, and then it re-froze. I returned about 8 hours later, got in the car (65 Mustang hotrod) started the engine, put it in gear, and went exactly nowhere!
The next morning, the grounds keeper loaned us his garden hose, which we hooked up to the hot water heater at the coffee shop, and melted the ice from the tires, and very sheepishly returned the hose. Had I just driven around slowly for a few minutes the day before the tires would have cooled enough that the problem would never happened.

Had lots of fun this morning getting to work. Here in Calgary it's been at least -25C (-10F) every morning this week. Today was not bad but yesterday was -42C (-44F) with the wind chill. I have a brand new large battery (800 Cold Cranking Amps) in my car and I plugged in my engine block heater and battery blanket but still I barely got the car started. A CD in my car split in half it was so cold.
I wear 4 layers and its still cold. Undershirt, button-up dress shirt, wool sweater, then winter coat. Wore a toque (wool hat) and a hoodie over that. Wore two pairs of underwear (one long johns). Two pairs of sock. Gloves and mittens over the gloves. Still cold.
Need to take the bus because I cannot justify paying $22/day to park downtown. Parking space decreasing what with $1 billion skyscrapers being announced almost monthly now.
In Edmonton they have heaters in the bus shelters. Sadly we do not in Calgary.
LOL. Thinking back, it's actually amazing I survived to recollect anything :o)
I remember a 1/2 ton Ford 4x4 shortbed ride I survived in Townsend, Montana. The owner was a friend of the folks I went elk and bear hunting with. He wanted to race a local Mustang on the two lane in the middle of puckerbrush nowhere. What we didn't know was that there was a bored trooper behind the Mustang. We left the trooper at (what I later learned was) 130. When we stopped, finally, the driver of the truck stuck his head out the window and shouted "What the hell's the matter with that pos Crown Vic, Harv?" This would be the point at which I stopped breathing.
The trooper made us go back the next day and pick up the beer can collection that blew out of the back of the truck onto his hood, and the owner of the truck had to promise to retune the troopers cruiser. We weren't jailed, shot, or fined. I have no idea what happened to the Mustang after we passed him.
Seems the truck owner was THE performance Ford mechanic for the area. I was actually kinda grateful when the red lights came on behind us, because I was begining to wonder if we had IFR clearance.
I managed to freak the owner (a client) of a new Mustang super car back last winter when he allowed me to "take it for a spin." When we hit 150 MPH on Gateway Blvd on Bethel Island at 10:30 AM, he blurted out "you're crazier than I am" in a very frightened voice :o) I have to admit to being surprised at the car's amazingly brisk acceleration in essentially un-tuned factory trim.
Ya, my parents had some money...we owned Eureka Health Foods for 10 years.
For the last 5 of those years I lived on 7th and E.
We were warmer in the high 30's, and right now it is 35.7, higher than predicted.
Personally, I'm all for global warming. I am not a good cold person. :0)
My trophy wife of 45 years is 180 from being a liber.
However, one time she walked back to my office, and Walter was substituting for Rush.
She heard Walter doing his bs about his wife, and she wanted to know what the hell I was listening to.
It took a nice lunch to calm her down and to realize that was just Walter's pipe dream.
This is way too cold for November !

Someone posted yesterday that 90% of California was under frost or freeze warnings.
I don't know as we never watch the tv stations since they are based in Gay Frisco.
This morning the temperature in the Clayton Valley didn't rise above freezing until about 9:30.

Weary commuters faced soggy sushi and the threat of frozen breast implants. Although Dr. John Blatherwick, of the Coastal Health Authority reassured everyone that most breast implants were perfectly safe to 25 below, down-filled bras are flying off the shelves at Mountain Equipment Co-op.
