RB Lynch, CB Hughes earn Pac-10 player-of-year honors

Cal didn't win a Pacific-10 Conference title, but it did garner two major awards Monday.

Junior tailback Marshawn Lynch was named league offensive player of the year, and senior cornerback Daymeion Hughes was named defensive player of the year.

The awards were selected by conference coaches.

Lynch has rushed for 1,178 yards, and his 107.1 average per game leads the conference. He is the first Cal player to win the offensive award since quarterback Mike Pawlawski in 1991.

Hughes leads the conference with eight interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. He also leads the conference in passes defensed with 19, and has 62 tackles.

The last Cal player to win the defensive award was former Milpitas High star Deltha O'Neal in 1999.

The other major award, coach of the year, went to USC's Pete Carroll.

• Cal players named to the All-Pac-10 first team were Lynch, Hughes, sophomore wide receiver DeSean Jackson, sophomore center Alex Mack, senior defensive tackle Brandon Mebane and senior linebacker Desmond Bishop.

Jackson also was selected as first-team punt returner.

Second-team picks were junior tight end Craig Stevens, junior offensive tackle Mike Gibson, senior defensive end Nu'u Tafisi and special-teamer Byron Storer.

• Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour said Monday that construction on the Student-Athlete High-Performance Center would begin on time.

``We're moving forward,'' Barbour said.

The environmental impact report and design for the building -- billed as key to the football program's continued growth -- are expected to be approved by the UC Board of Regents' grounds and building committee Monday.

Although Cal faces possible lawsuits aimed at stopping the construction --

The article does not give the full roster for the All Pac-10 team, but the Contra Costa paper listed them in the back of the sports page. It was interesting to note that USC landed 11 players on the squad (first and second teams). Of those 11 players, only one is a Senior. No matter what happens Saturday against UCLA, USC has reasons to look forward to next year.

Some of those 10 USC players probably won't return next year, though, depending on where they are told they could be drafted. For example, WR Dwayne Jarrett would likely go fairly high in the first round, which doesn't give him much incentive to play another year in college.

True. My mistake also, two are Seniors, Steve Smith and Ryan Kalil.

But recall last year when people said USC would be hurt by the loss of key people, now here they are one win away from a likely face off against Ohio State.

USC remains a competitive force for many reasons, but not the least of which is solid recruiting year after year giving them depth that many teams, especially in the Pac 10, do not have.

SC has a tough road schedule next year. They will likely enter the 2007 season ranked #1 or close to it, and if they play at the level of the past three weeks, they should win out convincingly. Sure, they'll be without Smith and Jarrett, but somebody from those highly touted recruiting classes will step up (Patrick Turner?) and surely the SC run game will be formidable next year. Do I need to add that SC's D is young and could be even better next year?

USC over Ohio St. by 14.
It's almost time to start the "Best Coach Ever" debate.

Ohio State is currently a 5 1/2 pt favorite over USC, which seems unusual since USC is not a lock to even face them.

Kinda disses UCLA.

It only gets better for the Trojan fans. A friend, who coaches at a Christian HS in LA, advised me two months ago that USC would land a biggie (see link).

No predictions from me on that one until Sunday.

UCLA's Dorrell's (sp?) job is probably on the line, so maybe he will finally show some emotion on the field.

USC and Florida should be 1 and 2 again respectively recruiting. And I predict they will meet each other in next year's NC Game.

Why in the world would they meet at the North Carolina game?
