| WASHINGTON, Nov. 27, 2006 -- The Marine Corps aviation component is transforming along with the total force while keeping its focus on its most important priority, supporting the Marines fighting on the ground, a senior Marine aviation officer said here last week.
While aviation is not usually associated with the Marine Corps, it is actually an essential element of the force, because it enables the Marines to respond quickly to requirements around the globe with a lighter, more versatile force, Marine Col. Robert Walsh, deputy assistant commandant for aviation, said in a Pentagon Channel interview last week. Aviation makes up about one-third of the total Marine Corps, with about 1,200 aircraft, Walsh said. |

Too bad Bush can't fight the war.
Just give Marine pilots a place to stow their rifle and they'd be wicked in a hang glider! (I'd still love to see them in A10/Warthogs)
That would have been a great platform for Marine aviation. I can't believe that they never bought it.
All the services need their own air power, moulded to their special needs.
The Army need helicopters to transport troops, guns, bullets and intel. The Blackhawk leads the way in armored battles.
The Navy needs its fighters to protect the fleet, where they are away from the Air Force fields.
The Air Force does the heavy battle field damage, as well as softening up targets.
Of course, this article points out the USMC needs very well.
And where would we be without the Coast Guard Search and Rescue wings?
Not one service can depend on the other to give the specific support required fo its mission.
With all the above having been said, there is not a man or woman in any service that would hesitate for a second to assist any of their brothers and sisters in arms, regardless of the uniform they wear. It is what makes our military so superior to any other in the world.......Bob
Only to the clueless, which includes Sgt. Sara Wood, USA.
The Corps never wanted the A-10, even when Congress was trying to force it down their throats prior to Desert Shield/Storm.
God help us.

Message to the enemies of America --
Lev 26:22 I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your [high] ways shall be desolate.
Falcons, Eagles, Wart-Hogs, Cobras, Copperheads, ......
Here are some great photos of a B-1 bomber after the Air Force pilot forget to lower the landing gear!

There is no such requirement.
If the US Air Force gave the Flying Leathernecks their A-10s free of cost, it might be hard for HQMC to turn it down.
That was the plan in 1990, to replace retiring OV-10s, but the Corps did not want them, period. Congress tried to force them to take them, similar to the strong arming that the Commandant endured to buy 70 F-14s back in the 70s, which Schlesinger thankfully 86'ed.
I guess Marine Corps aviation knows something we don't.
