Democrats say no liberal plans in next Congress

Sun Nov 26, 1:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three Democratic congressmen who are about to take important leadership posts said on Sunday they plan to pass popular legislation blocked by Republicans but would refrain from pushing some of the most controversial elements on the liberal agenda.

The three, appearing on Fox News Sunday, are among the most liberal Democrats who will take over key committee chairmanships when Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives in January.

Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record) of Massachusetts, who will take over the U.S. House of Representatives committee that covers banking and other financial institutions, mentioned raising the minimum wage, providing cheaper drug coverage for the elderly and providing more affordable housing and help with college tuition as the focus of Democratic legislation.

"Our first efforts are going to be to do those things that I think the mainstream of America wants," Frank said. "Some things have become liberal because the right wingers who control the Republican party have abandoned them to us."

Asked about his opposition to the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy toward gay service men and women, Frank, one of the few openly gay members of the House, said he would fight discrimination but that issue was "not what we're going to begin with."

"Democrats like winning elections," said Rep. John Dingell (news, bio, voting record) of Michigan, the incoming chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and the longest serving member of the House.

"We want to win elections and we're going to do our best to do so," he said. "This doesn't mean to get into any extreme positions on any matter. We'll do what makes good sense."

Rep. Charles Rangel (news, bio, voting record) of New York, who is about to become chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee which handles tax matters, said, "We don't want really a fight with the president. What we want to do is to prove we can govern for the next two years."

While he stood by his proposal to bring back the military draft to spread the burden of the Iraq war more evenly throughout U.S. society, Rangel said he would not push the issue and recognizes the obstacles to it ever passing.

He pointed out that Democrats' majority in House and especially in the Senate was thin and in the end President George W. Bush always had the power to veto what Congress passes.

Once they are installed, I don't think they'll be able to help themselves. Stretch can't even let common sense get in the way of her urge to settle scores.

Oh sure, they won't introduce liberal legislation after January. Its like believing you are still visited by the Tooth Fairy.

"Of course they don't have any plans for being responsible....the only plans they have is to investigate anything and everything to keep President Bush from trying to do anything....."

And lest they forget, they would have a tough time coming up with votes for their dirty deeds. They have Lieberman to deal with, passage takes 60 votes. So everything is not as cut and dried as they want us to think.
Would I love to see a few conservative democrats cross the isle.

It is to their advantage to do absolutely nothing for two years. They can blame it on republican obstructivism and make an appeal to the voters to give them more of a majority especially if Hillary is the presidential nominee.

Their agenda is to push the 9/11 commission recommendations and to raise the minimum wage and that's it.. They won't mess with the economy because they don't want a tanked stock market on their watch. The republicans already said they won't support a tax increase and they don't have a large enough majority to impose it so the current breaks will expire.

The worst thing that can happen to the democrats (and the country) is we have a terrorist attack on US soil, on their watch, especially when they're pushing the 9/11 commission as being the end-all, be-all of our homeland safety.

In other words, they're going to spend two years playing it safe. This will hurt them among their base, but help them among the average voter. Conservatives will have to have a REAL PLAN for governance in '08 if they don't want a full blown liberal government.

Liberals--by whatever stripe--need to be challenged on their sickening ideology, but it has to be done in a constructive, reasoned, appealing manner that John Q. Voter will believe and support.

Exactly. The are looking for the total package before they go crazy.

They also want this year's crop of representatives from conservative districts to get one safe reelection behind them (it is far harder to turn out a two-term representative).

They don't want to spring the trap prematurely.

That's ok. They expected grief, win or lose. The party has extinguished their fire immediately.

1)Rangel seems to have sneaked a peek at 'KKKarl's' book on GOP Fascism and liked what he saw. They never dreamed a Democrat would bring up the draft.

2)Murtha gets steam-rolled on his political gambit with Pelosi for the lead chair. These 2 had a deal that's long been brewing, you can bet. This was supposed to be his crowning glory. He's corrupt. A washed-up older version of Kerry, looking for his one last shot. His own party has rejected him TWICE now. Pelosi risked and lost very big. She ain't gonna last.

3)Hastings vs. Harmann. Still developing.

Nonsense. Lies. They are going to spend the next two years with investigations, impeachment efforts and it's going to be a nightmare. Stand back and watch.

Can you believe that some lefties think Rangle is only doing it to show the "folly" of war by drafting "everyone's" kids? Sometimes I wonder how these people get these ideas.

Democrats say no liberal plans in next Congress>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

They have no plan. They are too busy chasing each other around the table on issues of moon batty importance.

They may cause a lame duck presidency, but they will show the nation a lame moonbat congress.

All your leftist issues are belong to US!

And dear Nancy will not be able to keep the leftists cats of the Dimwit party in the bag for two years. We will have calls to bring back the draft, calls for gun control, calls for reinstatement of funding for pissing on religious icons as works of art from the National Endowment for the Arts, calls from Michael Moore to expropriate all Wal Mart property, and calls for CIA funding for Democrat operatives to perform felatio on all visiting statesmen from Iraq, Syria, and other Shiite nationals, as encouraged by former president Clinton and Senator Hillery ( It takes a Village)Clinton.

I mean those Arabs need to know how NOT to have sex with that woman, and they will abandon all initiatives for nuclear armaments? Drop your Jahalabiyahs boys!

Oh am I ever going to enjoy these next two years! Pass the popcorn! I love watching Dems get royally screwed by the phenomenal world.
