(CBS) COMPTON, Calif. - Beginning this weekend, Compton residents can exchange their guns for gifts -- no questions asked -- as part of a city-sponsored endeavor to reduce violence.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, personnel will collect firearms in the parking lot of the Circuit City/Ralphs Grocery shopping center at Compton Boulevard and Alameda Street. The guns for gifts drive will continue over the next three Saturdays.
For every gun turned in, participants will receive a $50 gift card to Circuit City, Ralphs Grocery or Toys "R" Us.
"The largest challenge to this program is to ensure that the local residents understand that this is a completely anonymous process, where we will ask no questions of the person surrendering the firearm," the sheriff's department statement said.
The guns will still be tested to ensure they havent been used in any unsolved crimes, said Sgt. Rich Pena of the sheriff's Compton Station.
"But the main thing is just getting them off of the street," he said.
In 2005, about 400 guns were handed over to the sheriffs department, Pena said.
The guns will be melted down at a Rancho Cucamonga foundry in July. The fancier guns, however, will be rendered inoperable and used in demonstrations, he said.
The program aims at making the community safer by decreasing the number of guns available to be stolen and used in criminal activity, according to the statement.
Compton had the highest homicide rate of an Los Angeles County city -- a total of 67 -- in 2005. By mid-November, there had been 65 murders. There has been a drastic reduction in killings -- with 35 reported so far -- a change that sheriff's officials attribute to aggressive law enforcement, including the creation of a Compton gang task force.

Their party symbol, after all, is a jackass!
huge flood of gift cards from Compton may hit the e bay card for cash program now.....then comptonians can buy better guns.
They'd have to comb through Compton with an enormous magnet to collect all the guns before I would feel safe venturing there!
It should read like this, Give a Gun and lose your Constiutuional Rights! Does anybody really think that the loss of your Second Amendment rights is worth a $50 gift card for Circuit City?
If the body is in the desert and a slug isn't available to match, get out of jail free.
Ditto for any slugs in jurisdictions that Compton can't access.
BTTT!
Uh. No. Steal guns.
Actually, if I lived in the area, I have three I'd trade in because they'll cost me more than $50 to fix, and would go for less than $50 if I tried to sell them. A great way for a gun owner to get rid of some crappy guns.
A statistical analysis was made to determine the amount of guns that would have to be bought back to make even a 1 murder difference in the crime rate. I forgot the number, but there isn't enough money in a normal city budget to buy up enough guns to save even one life.
...or a thief to find a perfect fence.
last week in Lancaster, PA they were giving $100 Visa cards for them
I have the same deal going on over here!
Bring in a gun and exchange it for a nice Houston Texans koozie
or a sharp pair of computer speakers in their original plastic bag.
Come one, come all!
The problem with programs like this is that it is almost always the law abiding citizens who participate, the ones who use guns for self defense.
The little thugs who SHOULD be disarmed are still packing.
Riiight! Wanna bet that they'll be 'rendered', instead, to some senior LEO's personal collection????
