MADRID (Reuters) - Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, the prison's former U.S. Commander said in an interview on Saturday.
Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski told Spain's El Pais newspaper she had seen a letter apparently signed by Rumsfeld which allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation.
Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, said she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.
"The handwritten signature was above his printed name and in the same handwriting in the margin was written: "Make sure this is accomplished,"" she told Saturday's El Pais.
"The methods consisted of making prisoners stand for long periods, sleep deprivation ... playing music at full volume, having to sit in uncomfortably ... Rumsfeld authorized these specific techniques."
The Geneva Convention says prisoners of war should suffer "no physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion" to secure information.
In addition to her receiving the affirmative action treatment, how about the kid gloves approach she received from the MSM? That was due to the fact that the MSM was gunning for Rumsfeld all along, and Karpinski's overwhelming culpability was inconvenient to their objective.
And how about comparing the MSM's treatment of Karpinski's looks with, say, the treatment that Linda Tripp received?
Lrt's face it, Karpinski's look was right out of Cental Casting for a prison-maiden-out-of-control movie ("Dykes behind Bars!"), and yet the media never went NEAR that one, whereas Linda Tripp was pilloried and villified for being overweight and not-a-beauty-queen. Talk about a double standard.
In June 2004, news broke that Karpinski had allegedly shoplifted a $22 bottle of perfume in October 2002 from the PX at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. She denied the allegation to CBS News, claiming that if any document to that effect ever surfaces it must be a forgery perpetrated to smear her.
In a statement released Thursday, the Army said Karpinski was guilty of dereliction of duty and shoplifting. Investigators did not substantiate allegations that she made a false statement to an investigating team and failed to obey a lawful order.
If she's telling the truth, then she needs to be put up on charges. "I Vas Only Followink Orders" was NOT considered a proper defense for the Nazis on trial at Nuremburg, and it isn't justifiable for us. Even in Army Basic Training, we were told that we could disobey an unlawful order, ie, shooting prisoners, etc.
If she's lying, then she's providing aid and comfort to the enemy and needs to be imprisoned.
Either way, this Karpinski chick needs to do some serious Leavenworth time. SHE was in charge at Abu Ghraib when the panties went on the head, SHE needs to be doing the hard time instead of the enlisted personnel.
"Karpinski insists she knew nothing about the abuse of prisoners"...."but she claims to have seen a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation techniques."Something doesn't add up here.If she had personally seen memorandum, signed by Rumsfeld authorizing "harsh interrogation methods"how could she have been unaware said activities were taking place?
Better yet ?
"The handwritten signature was above his printed name and in the same handwriting in the margin was written: "Make sure this is accomplished,"" she told Saturday's El Pais.
Did she see this befor or after she knew nothing about the abuse ? Also sounds like perjury to me. Either here or there one or the other is a lie
Reuters just can't seem to print the truth.
LOL.... exactly.
When it comes to the welfare of a few suicide bent freaks against the lives of thousands of Americans, I would give thousand of Americans top priority every time.
Oh, the inhumanity!!!!!
As a matter of fact, a number of the male generals who have retired have the same mentality. I guess it goes along with the feminization of the armed services.
Like standing in line at an airport???
She is full of BS
Line 'em up,
Mow 'em down.
End of problem
Sorry, I should have read the entire thread before I posted. I plead, "Great minds think alike".
'Karpinski and Karpinski ALONE is responsible for the frathouse unprofessionalism at Abu Ghraib. '
Bingo. What nailed her at Abu Ghraib was the unauthorized activities of which all involved had already stated was of their own accord. Now she's trying to save her own reputation. And what better way then to appeal to the anti-American crowd by playing bal with them.
She's not fit for command.
Karpinski was promoted to General during the Clinton administration -- at the reported insistence of the Clintons (and her radical feminist buddies).
Are you sure? It does not make sense that she would still be in then. Normally you are promoted again in that number of years and even if she was not would she be forced retired after being "passed over". Maybe the reserves do things differently but active duty she would have been told thank you but time to go home way before now.
