It already sounds absurd to say "N-word."

I have to laugh ever time I hear that or the 'F-word', etc. Just by using that term, it mentally brings up the word. You can call it a donut, but if it is a rose, it is still a rose. If you say 'N-word' or 'F-word' or any-other-such, it still conveys the meaning of the original word.
