This topic came up at our Thanksgiving dinner table. A family member who is a flight attendant said that it is common on the long international flights she works on for a Muslim to pray. They will quietly get up during the flight, go to a galley or lavatory area out of the way of passengers and crew, and quietly kneel and say their prayers. It has yet to cause a problem because it is unobtrusive and the passengers generally don't even notice.
That situation is totally different from a large group who has already acted suspciously standing and audibly causing a commotion while the flight is preparing to depart. The response of the airline to the imams and the CAIR folks who claim they are insensitive and ignorant should be to say that they are not ignorant - they have Muslims say their prayers every day on their flights without anyone even noticing. These passengers were detained specifically because they did not act in the way passengers and crew expect Muslims to act when praying - they acted suspiciously, disturbed and unnerved passengers and crew, and caused a scene. That behavior should and will get you thrown off a commercial airplane regardless of your ethnicity or religion.
