HEARNE - Paul Wartham made a three-hour drive from Fort Worth to College Station on Tuesday to watch a 45-foot bonfire burn, and when he learned he had to wait an hour longer than expected, he said he didn't mind.
"I think that bonfire is great," said the 50-year-old whose two children attend Texas A&M University. "I didn't go to A&M, but I understand why....

What about the second hand smoke?
This activity should most definitely be prohibited;)

People will wait many many hours in the rain and cold, and then try to kill each other to buy a stupid video game console.
This almost sounds normal.
WHOOP!!
Isn't this the same A&M "tradition" that killed a bunch of students a few years ago? I thought the university administration banned it.
Odd, to say the least. Oh well, it's Texas.
I'd rather be out on the highway thumbing a ride than have Miss Greta Garbo for my blushing bride,
I'm true to the colors of Maroon and White whether we win or lose or are in the wrong or right,
And if we lose old pal you can hear me say let's go out to Ed's and drink our cares away,
I'd rather be an Aggie no shirt or no tie I guess I'll be an Aggie til the day that I die!
Beat the hell outta t.u.!!!!!!!!
The university sponsored bonfire hasn't been held since the tragedy several years ago. This is a student organized event, off campus, and is not affiliated in any way with the school proper. It was even held in a different town to make it logistically easier to transport the large wooden poles.
We knew one of the 12 kids killed in the accident, who had been involved with a scout troop my wife ran before going to A&M. Our own son went to A&M a year or so after.
Odd, to say the least. Oh well, it's Texas.
It's not "odd." It's tradition. The Hasty Pudding awards, Skull and Bones, or almost anything else about "the great schools" like Harvard or Yale is what's odd. Oh well, they're not in Texas, so what else can you expect?
Gig 'em!
Yeah. It's Texas.
So go pound stone.
Farmer's Fight!
Bugger Off.
So go pound stone......with your head (to poundstone)
When I was a student in the 80's building the bonfire was definitely dangerous. Guys would get drunk at the Chicken then head out to work on Stack. That said, bonfire is one of the many traditions that makes A&M great, and I'm glad to see it brought back.
watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, the announcer said 2.5-3 MILLION people are lined up in the cold and rain to watch it.... could not PAY me to go to that!
What is strange about young men preparing to become military officers?
Same type of "strange boy" that populates the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets (A&Ms sister school), or VMI, or The Citadel... or Norwich? How about West Point's "strange" boys and girls... or the Naval Academy... the Air Force Academy...
Just "pretending" to be in the military by training to be... in the military.
I hope you were just joking.
Neal
heck, i thought this was a vanity thread about the thanksgiving feast you are having at your house... ; )
The A&M corps cannot be compared to VMI, Citadel, Norwich, West Point, etc and you know it. Wishful thinking on their part.
My cooking isn't THAT good!
well i am relieved you aren't cooking for thousands!
