Repeat abortions used to account for about 40 percent of all abortions in the United States, but a new study from the Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that figure is on the rise. Now, about half of every abortion done annually is an abortion done on a woman who has had at least one previous abortion. The study from AGI, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion business, examined the abortions done on women in 2002.
AGI said the typical profile of a woman having a repeat abortion is someone over the age of 30 who already has children and was using contraception at the time of the pregnancy.
Women seeking repeat abortions were also mostly lower-income women and 60 percent already had at least one child.
The research group relied on different surveys from both government and private groups to compile its research report and it indicated that one government survey of abortions from 2001-2002 showed 48 percent of women having repeat abortions.
Rachel Jones, a senior research associate on the study, told Reuters that the AGI survey "suggests that we need to do a better job helping all women better prevent unwanted pregnancies, so they can avoid having to decide whether to seek abortions or raise children they are not prepared for."
The survey also showed that one in three women had given birth to a baby in an unplanned pregnancy and 10 percent of all women had more than one unintended birth.
Sharon Camp, the president and CEO of AGI, told Reuters, that the solution to the repeat abortion problem was more abortions.
Camp urged promoting abortion businesses so abortion practitioners could tell women about contraception use after they have an abortion -- even thought most women having repeat abortions were using contraception at the time.
She also claimed the Bush administration's "wall of separation" between family planning clinics and abortion centers led to more abortions.
Right, because here in the Middle Ages, there are no other means of obtaining information than by word of mouth.
Promiscuity just might be the cause of this phenomenon...but this article studiously avoids any stats about how many of these repeat offenders are married. My guess is not many.
Maybe it has more to do with the fact that once someone has done it, they have no problem repeating it.
Peculiar phrasing. Don't they teach these people to write in journalism school?
Carolyn
We may have to cut Steve a little slack; he writes quite a few articles every day and is bound to slip up now and then. I'm guessing the pro-lifers assiduously avoid (or are barred from) the J schools, where about the only thing they'd be taught is how to editorialize news.
We have a very selfish generation. It's all about "me" for too many.
You're probably right. My niece has had two that I know of, has one child, and still isn't married. Can't find a man decent enough that is willing to marry her...she's a real piece of work...
There would not be any abortions(murders)if it were'nt for the selfishness, vanity, lack of responsibility and worship of all things evil by women. It was the weakness of Eve that took the first bite of the apple and then lured Adam into wickedness!
You caught that as well. I thought to myself, how do you do half of an abortion? That's like being half pregnant.
Better wording: "about half of ALL abortions done annually".
Is this not part of the culture of death as promulgated by our Catholic Pro Abortion Senators?
Casey Jr. is the latest member of the Catholic Pro Abortion Senator Caucus!!!!
Now, about half of every abortion done annually is an abortion done on a woman who has had at least one previous abortion.... someone over the age of 30 who already has children and was using contraception at the time of the pregnancy.
They need more abortions to stop abortions and the fact that there are abortions is Bush's fault.
But did the total number of abortions rise or fall? Is this due to a decrease in the number first abortions or an increase in repeat abortions? If it is due to decreasing numbers of first abortions, in later years the number of repeat abortions should delcine.
Who needs contraception when you have abortion clinics performing more than 1 million abortions per year? Now with the morning after pill, abortions are even easier.
What an amazing failure rate for the use of contraception. I don't buy it. I think they are lying about using anything, and killing the baby was their contraception plan all along.
