Giuliani Files to Explore Run for President
N Y Times ^ | 11/22/2006 | SEWELL CHAN

Posted on 11/22/2006 11:30:13 AM PST by Sabramerican

.......On Nov. 15, Mr. Giuliani met in Manhattan with supporters who could form the core of a national fund-raising effort, including Thomas O. Hicks, the owner of the Texas Rangers; Mel M. Immergut, the chairman of the New York law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy; and William E. Simon Jr., an investor who ran for governor of California in 2002.

Mr. Giuliani crisscrossed the country this year, visiting 25 states to campaign with or raise money for Republican candidates, according to his political action committee, Solutions America. But political analysts say his liberal views on social issues like abortion and gay rights could be a liability in a Republican primary.

“Everyone I’ve talked to keeps dismissing him for one reason or another: that he’s from New York, that he’s moderate, that he’s wrong on one social issue or another,” said Frank I. Luntz, a Republican pollster who worked for Mr. Giuliani in his 1993 and 1997 mayoral campaigns. “They don’t know Rudy Giuliani, and they don’t understand the electorate. The public is demanding intelligent leadership and is far more focused on personal attributes of the candidates than on specific policy issues.”

Mr. Luntz said he believed that the midterm elections, which cost Republicans control of Congress, would lead party members to consider an unorthodox candidate like Mr. Giuliani.

“There’s a great fear among the G.O.P. — and it’s a legitimate fear — that they could end up losing everything,” he said. “In times of genuine crisis, leadership matters a heck of a lot more than anything else.”

Brownback is said to be running. He would pull the social conservative votes that might have gone to Romney as an alternative to Giuliani.

Still Romney might get the nomination and he may make a race of it in the General compared to many other Republicans mentioned, but I anticipate he would lose. He would not be able to get the big States Giuliani would get that would make a Democrat win impossible.

I'm not surprised about Bill Simon. He was an inept candidate for governor of CA, ran an inept campaign and because of his incompetence and legal difficulties even the outright despised Gray Davis was reelected! Because of Simon we had to take Davis back and get a "do-over" with the recall election the following year.

If Simon supports Rudy, I support anybody but Rudy for the nomination.

KJO may be disgusting but so is the reality of abortion.

IMHO, we have to keep the prolife plank otherwise there's one less difference between two parties who are already too similar on their predilection for over-spending, corruption, etc.

And we should ask Newt Gingrich's wives the same question? Bottomline Rudy did an exceptional job as major for NYC, ever before 9/11, he made impactful changes. He's candid about his positions. He's certainly a better communicator than GWB, and as cerebral as Newt. These potential candidates need to discuss their thoughts for policy.

I would expect the media to hound Newt's jilted wife Maryann who is from the swing county in the swing state of Ohio. Talk about a double whammy.

He's certainly a better communicator than GWB,

Most politicians are

and as cerebral as Newt.

That I have my doubts about.

These potential candidates need to discuss their thoughts for policy.

Take it up with Frank Lutz who says personal attributes trump policy.

You're delusional. Never thought of Frank Luntz as a hero. He's a freak'en pollster! And anyone who thought George Allen reminded them of Reagan, should have their head examined.

better to regroup as conservatives than to alow the RINO wing to win.

Exactly, A RINO win in '08 Guarantees a RINO nomination in '12.

You'll see eight years of Hillary!, not four. Incumbents in American elections aren't impossible to defeat, but they are difficult to defeat.

Like Jesus, I can forgive you for your lack of foresight, for you know not what you are doing.

Hillary would do less harm than a liberal Republican would.

I would rather loose the POTUS, House and Senate than to have a RINO party in charge.

SayNoToRudy.org Ceases Operations, Endorses Giuliani for President

Sunday November 05, 2006

Today, SayNoToRudy.org will officially cease its operations and will no longer seek to actively discourage former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani from seeking the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008. In what has been a complicated, and outright ironic, transition for the entire organization, we now officially endorse Mayor Giuliani for President in 2008, should he choose to run. It has been a long journey for each of us involved on this team that has made us truly look inside ourselves and ask hard questions, but as of today, the consensus is that we as social conservatives have no reason to so forcefully oppose a Giuliani candidacy in 2008. We want Mr. Giuliani to have a fair chance to explain himself on the positions to other voters without negative preconceptions coloring their judgments. We will no longer write pieces discouraging Mr. Giuliani from seeking the presidency, nor will our writings discourage other voters from considering Mr. Giuliani as a presidential candidate, nor will we actively petition to prevent Mr. Giuliani from being a candidate, nor will we sell anti-Giuliani paraphernalia or engage in any sort of campaign to thwart his aspirations.

The creators of this organization now have a complex, but interesting story to tell. When we began this organization, we had skeletal knowledge of Mayor Giuliani’s views on social issues and some of the issues surrounding his tenure as Mayor of New York City. Uncomfortable with what we knew, we sought to do everything legally possible to prevent such a candidate from becoming the Republican presidential nominee. In our efforts to stop his potential candidacy, we delved deep into his record, poured over his speeches and writings, and spoke personally to those who were most familiar with him as a friend and leader. Unexpectedly, as we began to see more and more of who Mr. Giuliani really is, we found our disdain for his candidacy becoming continually undermined as we found that Mr. Giuliani is truly a committed Republican and an accomplished conservative on many issues. When we felt we had a sufficient picture of Mr. Giuliani, we found that his positives now outweighed his negatives. Furthermore, many of us have, in the past month, come to the conclusion that not only is Mayor Giuliani a leader to be admired and respected, he may also be the Republican Party’s best chance in 2008. Therefore, the creators of this organization, with much humility and apology, beyond all probability, hereby announce that we are willing to endorse Mr. Giuliani for the Presidency in 2008 both now, and if and when he decides to run. We have truly been humbled by this experience and we hope this will be a lesson to all of us in America that we must not be too quick to rush to judgment and that all of us can work together for the greater good, even if we disagree on some issues.

We hope that you will join us in this endeavor to promote a leader who we feel embodies all of the overlying principles that we think make the Republican Party great: Hard work, preparedness, optimism, responsibility, integrity through accountability, smaller government, and a bold vision for the future. We feel that Mr. Giuliani, America’s Mayor, embodies these values more than any other candidate on the political playing field today. As a result, Say No To Rudy is officially and forever shut down and will, in the coming weeks, be replaced by a website that will seek to provide convincing evidence to other social conservatives that it is not only O.K., but also preferable, to support Mr. Giuliani for President.

An odd thing to say. What I *know* is that FReepers are not of one mind about Rudy. Some favor his candidacy; some don't. It's close to an even split.

Hardly. I was referring specifically to the cheap and silly ploy that your post above represents.

Actually, his showing was pathetic. He turns off a majority of the base of the GOP, even when compared to Hillary Clinton. No surprise, since he's a stonecold Leftist just like she is.

whats your point

My point is that Rudy is going to be a hell of a lot better on this issue than anyone the Democrats will run...and this issue is more important than all others.

So it is now a "cheap and silly ploy" to inform FReepers what a group of conservatives have posted on their website?

People post comments from websites here all the time. IMO that is a good thing. It is good to be informed, particularly in this case, where the authors are a group of conservatives who have changed their minds.

November 8, 2006

Republican Rudy GiulianiDemocrats carried the day in Election 2006 and the 2008 campaign has already begun. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani leads the GOP field and is supported by 24%. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in second with 18% support.

Senator John McCain earned a lot of important friends with his aggressive campaigning in 2006, but he starts the 2008 campaign as the choice for 17% of voters.

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney comes in fourth with 9% support.

It is not clear if any or all of these candidates will formally run for the GOP nomination. When we asked voters who their second choice would be, the top four candidates lined up in the same order. Interestingly, nearly half of Rice’s supporters say that Mayor Giuliani would be their second choice.

This survey of 1,050 Republicans and 203 unaffiliated voters who would vote in a Republican Primary was conducted from November 4-7, 2006. In many states, unaffiliated voters are allowed to vote in party primaries.

Rasmussen Reports will update the Republican Presidential Primary competition every day based upon a three-day rolling average.

We will also be tracking the Democratic Party march to 2008 on a daily basis and providing new general election updates on a daily basis.
