This should be enough to make every American purple with rage - Colorado's Attorney General traveling on taxpayer dime with State Department connivance, to Saudi Arabia to apologize for the just conviction handed down by a Colorado state court upon Homaidan and Sarah al-Turki, a Saudi couple for false imprisonment and rape of their Indonesian nanny. Apparently, in Suthers' world the nanny and American justice is an afterthought - I'm ashamed Colorado's highest law enforcement official is even an American.

Me, too.

I live in Colorado, and I haven't heard one thing about this.

Interestingly, Ms. Schlussel never tells us what Suthers actually said. The only actual quotes do nothing to make her case, but rather suggest that Suthers did precisely the opposite of what she accuses him of doing.

Here is a summary of what actually happened, and it is (of course) completely different from the wretched screed posted above.

One would almost be willing to call Debbie Schlussel a liar; however, I've seen enough of her stuff by now to simply mark her down as a blathering fool.

I was going to post the obligatory "Bush and Saudi Prince Holding Hands" picture.

Then I thought, 'why bother?' It doesn't even matter any more.

I'm sick of our so-called leaders kissing the hooves of these barbaric desert pigs, but that's simply the way it is---and the way it will always be.

Keep driving those Hummers, morons.

Between this guy Suthers and the uttlerly incompetent Mary Lacy, something appears to be seriously wrong in the state of Colorado.

I don't see him quoted as "apologizing" for anything - I read his statements as "These guys just don't get it".

It would be interesting to know the diplomatic background of of the trip.

Likely the Saudis were putting a lot of pressure on the State Department; imagine the outrage in the US if the daughter of US Senator was put on trial in Saudi Arabia under the Sharia laws regarding rape and you get some idea of political problems this must be causing the Saudi ruling family.

Perhaps the objective of his visit from the US perspective was to make the point that under US law this was a state matter, and that the US Government could not intervene even if it wished to?

"In an unprecedented move, the State Department flew Attorney General Suthers to Saudi Arabia to personally explain--and apologize for--Al-Turki's conviction to Saudi King Abdullah."

This is an example of why the policies and arrogance of our own State Department is the biggest threat to our national security. By its own self-importance, the department holds itself unaccountable to Congress, the President, even the Secretary of State; not to mention expressed demands of the electorate. This insanity has been going on for decades and every S of S has refused to do (or could not do) anything about it. If Condi Rice (or any S of S) can’t control (or condones) such continuing incompetence and dangerous policies of the State Department, she shouldn’t head that or any other department.

Ridiculous.

When are Americans going to stop apologizing for everything they are and for everything others are NOT?

This is a gross misrepresentation of what Suthers did. He wasn't apologizing, just helping out American-Saudi diplomacy. al-Turki is the son of a prominent imam who runs one of the major mosques in either Mecca or Medina. I don't think we could have just ignored this dispute, and perhaps we'll even give a few people some clues about how our justice system works better than Sharia.

This is why we can take Suthers' name out of contention for the Senate seat in '08 or any other office for that matter.

Interesting thread you kicked up; I must conclude the intentions Debbie Schlussel assigned to the Co. AG are at best a poor choice of words.

From what I gather the conviction was just and the AG's trip was diplomatically necessary. Did you expect the Co. AG to tell the prince in S.A. that sharia law is utter garbage and that he should shove it?

Liberals are constantly apologizing and groveling for the aspects of our civilization we should be proud of, such as that we do NOT follow the barbaric precepts of "sharia law" - there are serious problems with our legal system, to be sure, but this case does not seem to reflect any of them - convicting and sentencing this scumbag would have been a proud moment if this idiot Attorney General had not flown across the world to grovel to an Islamo-fascist King.

"Can you imagine the U.S. sending a state Attorney General to explain to Hitler why we allow Blacks and Jews to serve as witnesses in our courts and why enslaving and raping them for five years is a crime?"
