The president and first lady stopped overnight in Honolulu -- and, of course, they met with the troops at Hickam Air Force Base -- on their way home from the Asian Pacific Economic Council meeting. He was briefed by the US Pacific Command while there.

Defense Secretary Rumsfeld met with Afghanistan Minister of Defense General Abdul Rahim Wardak at the Pentagon.

QUOTE: "Laura and I are honored to be with you. We're honored to say thanks on behalf of a grateful nation. ... You serve at a time when we witness an ideological struggle between those who love freedom and those who hate freedom. And the outcome of this struggle will determine how your children and grandchildren live. And I'm determined, like you are determined, that freedom prevails."

Pesident Bush is introduced by Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command Adm. William J. Fallon, prior to addressing the troops at a breakfast at Hickam

I'm thinking it's a good thing General Sherman's troops aren't here to witness the chow halls our wonderful military has at "base camp." What a wonderful, long way we have come since those horrible days.
