He is a social conservative .... (Mr. Hunter introduced H.R. 552 the Right to Life Act, which proposes to "implement equal protection for the right to life of each born and preborn human person."). He is further to the right on social issues than either John McCain, Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney.
A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Hunter was first elected to Congress in 1980, when he won in a long-shot bid over 18-year Democratic incumbent Lionel Van Deerlin. When asked why he is up to the challenge of a presidential run Mr. Hunter told me, "because I believe national security and a strong military are more important issues today than ever before. On Iraq, Mr. Hunter points to a pattern he says America has followed for the past 60 years, "My campaign message on Iraq will consist of a three-step process: Establish a free government, which we've done, establish a military that will protect that government, and then leave Iraq."
Regarding Iraq, Mr. Hunter provided me with a letter he recently wrote to President Bush urging the president "to accelerate the process of deploying Iraqi forces to security environments that force them to engage in difficult military operations.
On the issues of border security and illegal immigration, Mr. Hunter has been a vocal critic and an advocate of tougher illegal immigration laws. "I don't look at the border as an immigration issue, I look at it as a national security issue. After we built the border fence along the San Diego-Tijuana region, smuggling and drugs were reduced in that area by 90 percent.
History suggests that voters in early primary states will recognize and embrace a message of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. We need a real actual conservative who is electable and is not a fate equal to or worse than Hillary or whoever the Dems put up to run. It sounds like we've got Romney and this guy. I'm already feeling a little better about this. A real actual pool of people who I wouldn't feel guilty voting for.
Giuliani's a nice guy and I might vote for him for VP, but not for the big guy.

Completely agree. I read an interesting bit on Captain's Quarters (I think it was) about how effective the net was in pushing Jim Webb's candidacy. Of course, they had the WaPo to help ruin Allen, but clearly they found a way for the alternate media to be effective. Duncan clearly deserves a hearing.
One thing that Duncan Hunter has also...that needs to be "exploited"...
He is a war veteran.
We know how the Dems loved to flaunt the military experience of Webb and others...and taunt the GOP candidates that "never served, so how can they question Murtha"...right??
Well...they wouldn't be able to use that against Hunter...and his SON has served in Iraq...so Rangel couldn't get him.

IIRC, the Iraqis are fighting WITH coalition forces in Baghdad and Anbar. Why can't we let them train and learn before we leave them alone before they are ready? Within the next 6 weeks, ISF are scheduled to be in the lead in 75% of the country.

I am seriously taking a look at Duncan Hunter. If he were nominated what is the possiblity that he could actually carry CA in the general?
Duncan Hunter is truly one of the good guys. He would make a wonderful VP. He does not have the "IT" factor to win the presidency (especially against Hillary).
Hnter's our only choice. I lived in NYC when Rudy engineered the amazing turnaround and will be forever grateful but he is too liberal to pick Judges for the SCOTUS. I like Newt, but he's a non-starter. McCain won't make it past So. Carolina. I don't have the hatred for McCain that most Freepers do, but to me-he seems a bit off. I like Romney a lot but the media will have a field day with him being a Mormon.
So, I say history does not dictate to us. It is only a scribe that writes about what we decide and do!

If he's as strong on border security AND Tancredo's 'attrition' (NO EARNED SHAMNESTY), then I'm all for him, can he run with Tancredo? lol.
The only problem I see for either one, is what we have already witnessed. The GOP will work AGAINST anyone who's not walking lock step with Bush on this issue. And now we've got Martinez at the RNC who's agenda is COMPLETELY the opposite of Hunter/Tancredo. That's why Bush wanted him, even in dual roles.
But if either of them is going to toss their hats in, they need to do it NOW. We must stop the OBL before Bush and Pelosi can pass shamnesty.

I've watched him as he chaired the Armed Services Committee meetings. A very impressive guy!
Duncan Hunter is well respected in California and in Washington, and needs to get major attention as a candidate for '08 very soon. We need to call, write letters and e-mail the MSM, Senators, Representatives and the RNC, and let them know we won't ever vote for an open borders president again.
The fact that this Republican president has always been on the same side as the Dims on pandering to Mexico (shamnesty) should tell everyone all they need to know about "compassionate conservatism".
America is badly in need of a REAL AMERICAN president who will put America FIRST!
I'm with the rest on this thread, the more I hear about this guy, the more I like him.
