BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel was assassinated near Beirut on Tuesday, security sources said.
They said gunmen opened fire as his convoy drove through the Christian Sin el-Fil neighborhood. Gemayel was rushed to hospital where he later died of his wounds.
Lebanon is in the throes of a political storm pitting the anti-Syrian ruling majority against the pro-Damascus opposition. The political tension threatens to spill into street confrontations.

The Muslims are now at 55% of the population. It's time for the Muslims to make the move on Lebanon and install an Islamic Govt.
Democratically of course like they did in Iran, Afghanistan, and will try do so in Iraq. - tom.
The muzzlethemgoats are playing dominoes and we, in the west, are playing chess. Dominoes has its advantages.
Could be compared to Archduke Ferdinand. The Great War didn't start instantly, but it started anyway and while no one wanted it they were forced into it by treaties. OTOH, terrorism is a tool of Nihilists who are trying to bring down all institutions.
Time to assasinate the pencil necked leader of Syria. But Bush will wimp out.
Yup. Many folks think that war began the day after he was shot. It took time for events to take their course.
Well, I didn't mean WWIII. IMO this is the beginning of civil war in Lebanon.
It might be the start of street fighting in the Kingdom of Jordan, but the borders are nearly non-existent so it will be part of the general ME troubles. What part is civil war and what part is regular war will be hard to separate. Will Israel come in on the side of the King of Jordan?
Can you say religious civil war? Dominoe effect?
"(Breathless) Has speaker elect Pelosi issued a statement yet. How 'bout Harry Reid. Does this mean we can cut and run and appease sooner!!!! /s."
Nah, they don't need anymore appeasement syrup. They'll use this in a gun-control ad.
BTW, was there not anyone with a gun guarding this guy?
Our state department is a bunch of Clinton appointees who were not culled by the Bush administration - should have been, but that is 20/20 hindsight.
The Muslims are looking for a major butt kicking if they continue on this tack. We have warned the American government - our government - that this would be a spreading disease - like a plague of lice. For lack of a better phrase.
We all know what has to be done, we all know that the left wants to dearly succumb to the muslim belief, one word at this time:
COUP
Don't forget Zippy Lippi.
Give it a couple days and you'll soon hear the MSM claims that
1) The Jews are behind it and
2) Its Bush's fault (just like everything else)!!
>>"It is the same story in each and every country on every continent where the "Religion of Peace" has embedded itself."<<
Yeah. And one of these days the good guys are going to start shooting back, one by one by one...
Send Rick Warren in!
Democracy, Muslim style.

I guess it wasn't enough that Hizballah killed Christians for their propaganda during the last conflict, they also wouldn't let those left leave. They also tried to kill the other March 14 minister (Greek Catholic), hours later, to complement the 6 that resigned, so that the government would be dissolved. Since Geagea (another anti-Syrian Christian), warned about this two days ago... I want to know how he knew and why he was told, how this happened in a Christian neighborhood in daylight... how did the gunman know they'd be so safe? Funny how, he has called on Lahoud to resign asap, accusing him of covering for the terrorist attacks but he also called for the Amal and Hizbullah ministers to return to the cabinet.
Gunmen have fired shots at another office of March 14's minister Faraoun in Ashrafieh. March 14 meets tonight to figure out their course of action.
Ferngiah even had the nerve to claim March 14 killed him... sick.
Pierre's father addressed the crowds and asked for those who loved him to preserve the cause he died for and for self restraint so not to desecrate with he said is the cause for freedom... and asked for prayer on the meaning of martyrdom and how to protect the country, away from revenge and irresponsible action.
Walid Jumblatt visited the hospital and affirmed the international tribunal was coming and warned against civil strife... so they could not let them drag Christians to sedition. He stated they would remain as on the great day (March 14) with Pierre in the lead... peaceful and democratic for Lebanon.
Michael Aoun (Assad regime defender), read a statement condemning the horrific assassination. He asked the authorities to uncover the masterminds asap and in the most efficient way. He said the crime undermined the unity of the Lebanese and creates conflicts within the Christian community, (yeah, right).
March 14 should fill those minister spots asap.
It would be interesting to know what Baker says.
and so with the opposition to Syria out of the way ... What now do the liberals say about the importance of Iraq becoming a Democracy? Do they still desire to leave? Will nothing stand in the way of Tehrans desire to destroy Israel?
