Kudos for his standing up for his Confederate heritage, but the Scots-Irish are a group of foreigners across the ocean.

The South put up a good fight considering they had less people, less railroads, less manufacturing, and a more export dependent economy than the North. They also did not strongly go on the offensive into the North until late in the war. Had they proceeded to Washington, DC in the Battle of Manassas/Bull Run, the Confederacy could have gotten foreign backing and could have won the war.

"The Scots-Irish are a group of foreigners across the ocean"
No, the Scots-Irish are Americans descended from immigrants to the Colonies of Scottish origin who came from Northern Ireland (Ulster) in the 1700's. They were Scots from Ireland, hence Scots-Irish.
They have been highly overrepresented in our Armed Forces since the Revolutioary War. Both Washington and Lee considered them their finest soldiers. To this day, they serve in disproportionate numbers.

The Confederacy's goal was simply independence. They did not realize that in order to end the military threat they would have to occupy and take out of the war a significant part of the Union. It is one of the mistakes we made in Vietnam. Washington alone however was not that important. The British took it in 1813 to little effect.

But at a steep price. If Europe's two powers England and France who at the time were Monarchies would have intervened on the side of the South, mostly because of the disdain of democracy and the bad influence it had back home. The North embraced democracy, while the South embraced Aristocracy, which was more palatable to the European powers.

Now had the Europeans intervened in the war and the South would have won, now what would the European powers, especially the English have demanded, or for that part, just taken. The English looked upon the war as an opportunity to regain the Empire and its holdings in the Americas, and the French looked at it with the same eye for the resources of the region as well as a foothold for the real objective Mexico. Though Jefferson Davis was actively negotiating with Mexico for assistance with the prize of Texas back to Mexico for their assistance. The other European power of the time Czarist Russia was more inclined to a relationship with the North and which played a wild card back in Europe.
