Is Your Newspaper America's Worst?
Powerline Blog ^ | 11/20/06 | John Hinderaker

Scott (Johnson) recently suggested that the Minneapolis Star Tribune may be America's worst newspaper. That produced lots of emails from readers who nominated their own newspapers, or others with which they are familiar, for the honor. This gave us the idea for a new poll: What is the worst newspaper in the United States?

Here are the nominees, with commentary by those who nominated them:

The Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nominated by Scott, citing Mark Steyn: “Unreadable sludge.”

The Houston Chronicle: A reader who worked for the Chronicle for “quite a while”: “Its main problem is not even its liberalism, which it suffers from, but its vapidity. On top of that, the editor from Hearst Corp. is trying to teach Houstonians how to be proper liberals. The fact that no one ever hears about the newspaper at America’s fourth largest city should tell you a lot.”

The Olympian (Olympia, Washington): MHJ: “From their editorial about how good it is that the Governor is going to direct the employees of the State Department of Transportation to cooperate with the State Auditor on taxpayer-directed performance audits, to their choice of letters to the editor, the Olympian begs for an editorial staff with common sense and analytical skills.”

It's easy to tell when a paper is an unreadable piece of slime without even looking at the editorial or op/ed page. Any paper that headlines stories about students sleeping outdoors to focus on the homeless or people who are going "hungry" for a few hours because the a local food pantry closed down are prime candidates for most awful. Rags who ignore major military engagements or developments in Iraq or Afghanistan while simply blaring out the numbers of dead is an awful paper. We'll rule out most of the medium to small lib rags that infest the country.

Any paper that does feature stories on families who are "struggling" to live in todays economy without mentioning the personal problems that might have caused said family's problems are also prime candidates. Papers who put on the front page some new report about how global warming is going to kill us in the next year if we don't do something immediately while putting news about the soaring economy and bright prospects for Americans is an excellent candidate for biggest tree-waster.

while the Star-Tribune does have Lileks as a regular columnist they do puff pieces on Dem pols that are sickening. They did one I read before the election on Any Klobuchar that practically anointed her for sainthood. But that's the Red Star-Tribune. They make no bones about their ultra-liberalism.

I am surprised the Atlanta Journal Constitution did not make the list. It is a third rate paper at best!

I cancelled both papers two years ago and haven't missed it a bit. I get my news online.

I figure if it's anything newsworthy it will be on the radio or online before the morning edition of the Plain Dealer and I don't have to get my bp up because of the editorials.

I guess the Austin (un)American Spaceman didn't make the list. It could'a been a contender.

Paper's Endorsement of Bush Causes Outrage

Just happened to see this thread and finally found the Austin paper listed. Did you notice the michael moore crap in it today?

The Orlando Sentinel (Slantenal) is as lefty as any ,,, they had been gaming their circulation numbers by selling below costs (sometimes free) to hotels , that stopped a while back , even with that planned loss factored in they had another double digit circulation loss on top of that this year.. they regularly place 2 or more copies of each national advert insert in each paper to get them all distributed , a sure sign they are still misrepresenting their numbers to advertisers...

The Independent in Britain is the worst newspaper on the planet. It is the only newspaper that would employ Robert Fisk.

How can any paper be any worse than the New York Times. unless its the Washington post?

The New York Times was taken out of the competition because it's the obvious winner. This is a contest for second place...

I wish mine had less ink, more wood, as it's burning rate and heat output needs to be greater.

If you only read the Sports Section of the Houston Comical you'd swear you were reading an Austin newspaper.

Abilene Texas was voted the 3rd most conservative city in the US, yet the Abilene Reporter (distorter) News is a liberal bird cage liner. I just don't know why anyone buys it.

Hey, howz about the "Pig Squealer" (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

I always found it funny that the alternative newsweeklies in Cleveland (Scene & Free Times) faced a real challenge in coming up with anything that could be more to the left than the PD's rantings. Free Times is staffed by people with little Lenin statues on the dash of their '83 VW Rabbits. Scene actually publishes some pragmatic, adult thinking once in a while.

Sounds like the "alternative" paper here.

To be left of the Sacramento Bleat means that you have to have the "Little Red Book" Tatooed on your arm.

I second that.
Beyond the left wing politics, they don't even print a business page on Mondays.
Pathetic rag.
