I say yes and no.
Yes, the strongest and most credible movement towards reform must originate from within muhammadanism. The scholars, thinkers and "laity" alike must re-examine on the broadest possible scale...
...The very need for "islam" - AKA muhammadanism - to survive, let alone thrive and propagate.
Which leads directly into my second point. Since my own deepest and most thorough scholarly research has strongly indicated with the highest levels of positive correlation, that islam is simply a bastardised, adulterated, perverted, and grievously twisted satanic hybrid of other faiths and philosophies...
Those other faiths and philosophies of origin must be thoroughly reviewed and tested each on their own merits, as to their veracity, and their unadulterated streams of thought forded once more.
Principally, muhammad {pork chops be upon him} stole, ripped-off, and plagiarised wantonly and deliberately from Judaism and Christianity.
To a lesser degree of content, Zoroastrianism, and ancient Arabic pantheism {specifically, the minor god, al-uzzah represented by the crescent moon as a male symbol encompassing the "star" of the planet, Venus - a feminine symbol across the panthons of many cultures, including Phoenician, Babylonian, Chaldean, Greek and Roman to name but a few...thus forming a fertility symbol - perfect for a male-dominated fertility and death oriented cult}
He did this specifically in response to seeing Jewish merchant and trader success, and Christian unity throughout the middle east, and witnessing Arab poverty, division, infighting, and failure.
His unstated purpose was to unite Arabs around a monotheistic idea and ideal - a rallying point to foment the creation of an Arabic religious identity to be forcibly exported, forged in war, and foisted upon other countries and cultures - to conquer and subdue them at whatever cost. Owing to the limited nature and applications of Zoroastrianism in the modern world, and to the inexorably vile nature of the Arab pantheistic influence over the development of the early Arab-centric assimilate-or-suffocate character of islam, these ought to be discounted and not be included in any comparative studies, except for purely academic reasons.
The natural result of a thorough review of Judaism, Christianity, who share the same G_d, should be -
- the summary conversion of every open-minded, heartfelt scholarly inquirer from muhammadanism's madness to the eminent sanity, mercy, love, and justice of either becoming Jewish, or Christian.
It is the only natural progression - or regression, if you wish - for a highly regressive and repressive "religion" {term used highly advisedly under the best of lights!}
Islam unrepentant, islam unreformed, islam unchanged can only become more and more what the old and new testaments referenced as "the whore of Babylon...", the "great Harlot, sitting upon many waters...drunk with the blood of the saints", and conceivably even "the abomination which brings desolation" or the "abomination of desolations".
Islam/muhammadanism "reformed", cannot remain 'islam': It can only be Judaism, or Christianity. Its adherents must only naturally become Jews or Christians. I will be satisfied to see either outcome, and consider it justice done.
Those are its truest historical roots, and should it renounce the apostasy of muhammad and his many revisions of the patriarchal lineage - his ennumerable blasphemies in which he placed himself above Christ as a prophet and teacher, and supplanted Christ as meschiayach/messiah with the unholy reincarnated "12th Mahdhi", bringer of divine chaos, division and destruction - then having abandoned muhammad for G_d, if not Christ - it must choose:
Old covenant, or New Covenant.
