Harry Reid, a Mormon and new Senate Majority Leader, must be bracing for the incoming hate-mail!

Mitt Romney (R) begins the 2008 campaign season in fourth place among those seeking the GOP Presidential nomination, trailing Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Condoleezza Rice....

This writer should be commended for how informed he/she is.

Given the commitment of Mormons to family values, I think the Democrats would be far less likely to vote for a Mormon than a conservative Republican. However, Romney's advocacy for universal health care if not a nationalized medical system and his origins in Maryland are more troubling than his church affiliation.

This whole thread saddens me. I've seen people in this thread equate Mormonism to radical Islam. I hear comparisions to cults and scientology. Patently wrong, false and stated for the simple act of religion bashing at the expense of Mormons.

Mormons are among the MOST patriotic groups of people. Their hymnals include all our national songs INCLUDING the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The United States really has a great internal friend in the LDS Church.

Mormons typically vote conservative values. Pro-life, lower taxes, smaller government, self sufficiency, and so on.

Mormons are the single largest supporting group of the Boy Scouts of America. Last I heard their support for the BSA was greater then all other groups...combined.

Mormon contribution to charity comes over and above any tithes that they contribute to the church. The Mormon church has entire farms and canneries devoted and dedicated to only supplying food and supplies to those in need, mormon and non-mormon. In cases of disaster they are among the first to arrive, along with the US Military and the Red Cross. Mormons never ask or take credit.

The LDS church is one of the great supporters of the nation of Israel and the Jewish people even though the Jewish people have not asked and oft times cast stones back at the Mormons. Mormons still stand and will continue to stand with the Jewish nation.

The preferred recruit for the FBI, CIA, NSA, and Secret Service is a return Mormon missionary. By preferred I mean if you have two candidates with the same qualifications the Mormon missionary will be chosen over the other. Not because of religious preference, but because of past experiences in character proven time and again.

Not one single church position is a paid position. Deacon, Priest, Bishop, President, heck even the Janitor working at a particular building is unpaid. They donate their time to the church, on top of any tithing or offerings they have already given.

There is no real reason for it yet there are those of other religions bash and persecute (yes it is persecution) the Mormons at every opportunity they get. Most of the time there is no reference to this, just things heard on the street. When there is reference it comes from already established anti-mormon literature and not from stated Mormon doctorine. In other words the persecuters know not of which they speak.

Of course I know that the anti-mormons will again raise their head and flame for the sake of flaming. Remember though I am not talking about church doctorine. I am just stating what I have found about Mormons in general removing all the Christian - non-Christian nonsence.

As long as it's a religion that preaches love not hate, then I could care less what religion a candidate chooses to follow. I'm surprised so many people do care.

I would like to point out for the record that the 60% who would never vote for an atheist is why we have so much religious fakery in D.C. today. Does anybody believe all these folks are religious? Heck no. They know that they can't win if they don't pretend to be religious. For me that is absolutely worse than reality. We should allow atheists to run and win on issues. However, if an atheist, small government conservative who was for 2nd amendment, low taxes, border security, strong military went out and said they were an atheist too, they would lose to a big government liberal who went to church even if they didn't mean it. That's a problem I think.

I have no strong opinion on the Mormon religion. I don't regard it as my role to sit in judgment of someone's faith unless it calls for killing or harming others.

The Mormons in this regard are harmless. We may regard their views as eccentric, but not damaging. If there is a Mormon president, it would unlikely be a tragedy so long as he kept the Constitution in mind.

Regards, Ivan

I'm sure the press will do all they can to get out the message that Romney is a Mormon.

Those numbers would change drastically if he won the nomination.

It doesn't bode well for his candidacy now though.

Give me a moral Mormon any day to a Democrat so-called, Christian.

Time to destroy another possible Rep Presidential candidate. Yet, more then 43% of the voters in Mass voted for him.

I wouldn't vote for any governor of the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. Romney likes socialized medicine, as evidenced by the MA health law forcing everyone there to buy medical insurance, or be surcharged on their state taxes.

While I might vote for a Mormon candidate, I'd never vote for an anti-gun, Mormon candidate.

I will impose no religious test* on my voting behavior.

Unless you consider Scientology a religion, and maybe Islam too.

Other than that, no religious test.

I've never understood the anti-Mormon stuff. I grew up with lots of Mormons. Every one I knew was kind, hard-working, and honest as the day is long.

I wouldn't have had a problem with voting for a Mormon until I spent some time in Utah two years ago.

I would not vote for Mitt Romney, but the main reasons have nothing to do with him being a Mormon.

I've been telling y'all that Mormon was the kiss of death at the Presidentaial level on multiple threads. I live in Nevada and have stories going from Harry Reid on down. There will be questions about magic underwear, getting your own planet, polygamy, treatment of women, tratment of blacks, influence of the Bishops . . . .

Don't make me say I told you so.
