I read that pit bulls actually got their name b/c in England (I think it was) people would breed them for killing in "pit sports."
They would dig huge pits and put the dog down in it. Then they would release hundreds of rats into the pit and bet on how many the dog could kill in a given time.
They specifically bred them for larger and larger and more and more powerful jaws and an aggressive temperament.
