I think the Muslim world looks at us as paper tigers who will run at the first hint of resistance. I think that the reinstatement of the draft says that we're in it for the long haul and will pay the price to win. We need a bigger footprint in the region.

Are you of draft age, or older? If not, will you volunteer, to show solidarity with the young men you want to have drafted?

The Dems must be very desperate for a new class of victims, but how are they planning to blame someone else for this one?

He might want to consider that if his insinuations that the draft was just a way to kill young black and brown people he would be killing his voting base.

By the way, I think a years stint for all young in some form of service to the nation would help to remind them that freedom is not free.

That may be the only thing I agree with Charlie Rangel about. (Speaking as a draftee myself.) I agree with him too. Having a draft would expose more young people to the military and (I think) make them appreciate and value their country more.

You can find a PS3 for $500? I'll stand outside for that deal myself.

"Social cohesion is the goal of totalitarian states. Freedom is the goal of the United States."
Thinking first, replying later would do you a lot of good:
Any state, be it free, not so free, or totalitarian, needs a measure of social cohesion to exist. Without this cohesion what one gets is the tower of Babel [a multiculturalist dream, BTW]. So the question is, in what measure does a free country [especially a free country at war] need social cohesion, to what measure do we already possess such cohesion, is the present measure of cohesion sufficient or does it need strengthening?

Rangel's goal- a military force that serves as a giagantic sop to the poor. A european type military civil service armed forces.

You're willing to have others forced into the military (I'm not saying that to sound anti-military - I'm not - just to be accurate: The draft would force young people into the military). Would you voluntarily sign up as well, to show solidarity with the young men whom you want to force into the military?

Nobody is looking at the elephant in the room....

I bet somewhere in him, Charlie knows that the military may save a generation of young black men.

A good number of draftees of the 50s and 60s decided to stay longer than two years.

Practice what you preach. I said that it's the way of totalitarian governments to seek "social cohesion" by forcing people into government-dictated pursuits. That's a fact, Jack.

What do you do with your time to be able to say that young people have it "too easy"?
Do you happen to know what a non sequitur is?
Try "irrelevant". What does your question have to do with the observation? A thoughtful question, if a challenge was justified, would be "what did you do when you were in your 20s"? Of course, the answer to that might just dig you a deeper hole.

Do you work more than one job? Or are you retired?
Do you have time to camp all day in front of a toy store? Did you ever?

I agree. And it's the young people today who VOLUNTARILY sign up for the military, they don't have to be forced into it. I don't know why it's so popular on this forum to trash young people. What if I went around saying, "Retired people are so damn lazy. Why can't they do anything?"

Thank you for explaining it so well. Many young people would rather play video games because they are too young for the bar scene or they just don't like it. Many can't afford to go out all the time because of all their bills. Here in NJ car insurance is very costly. I don't know how any of my children will be able to buy a house without years of saving after paying off school loans unless they get help from us. If there was to be a draft I would suggest that they take the ones who drop out of school 1st. I think the draft is a bad idea because I remember it. All too well I remember the college riots and I was only like 9 or 10 yrs old. I think forcing the military on someone doesn't make for a good soldier but then I've never had to serve. I do remember parents ready to send their sons to Canada though.

"they can be dangerous to their fellow troops" - I thought the same thing when I read the article. Can you just imagine draftees that don't want to be there (Iraq, Afghanistan) in the first place, how would they react in a dangerous situation with our soldiers who are fighting because they volunteered to protect their country? Like your son and my son (who is also an only child). So now we have the Dims wanting to reinstate the draft, all the while threatening to cut war funding. Horrors!

God bless your son for his service!
