Crime is not bad in New Orleans. I've just recently come back after spending 4 weeks working down there
Crime is not as bad in New Orleans as it was before Katrina, sure.
But then huge numbers of folks have left the town, (including a lot of the criminals, who have proceeded to raise the crime rate wherever a lot of them have settled).
Despite that, only a few months back, they had to call in the National Guard AGAIN to go help keep down crime there.
So while your 4 weeks vacation there might have been nice, it doesn't really change the facts.
They don't cal in the National Guard to quell crime if crime is nice and low. Crime in New Orleans IS bad.

they called in the National Guard to handle the drug thugs that are repopulating the ninth ward and because there is a shortage of police. The thugs in the ninth ward walk around in the day time with what look like AK47's (yeah, they could have been semi auto SKS's but I didn't want to get out of the van and see for my self) and aren't afraid to shoot it out with the police.
I wasn't on vacation, I was working. My company now operates the school buses for the Parish of Orleans and the garage is in the ninth ward.
