Tourism official says part of St. Louis only for buying crack

Associated Press

A tourism official trying to portray St. Louis as a safe place to visit ended up referring to part of the city as a place that would only be visited to purchase crack cocaine.

A research company, Morgan Quitno Press, called St. Louis the most dangerous city in the United States in October.

The public relations director for the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission, Mary Hendron, was trying to combat the perception of St. Louis as unsafe to Venues Today, a national trade publication which covers sports and entertainment facilities.

She was explaining that crime figures were skewed by high crime in neighborhoods that aren't tourist destinations.

"It's a bad part of town, but every city has a bad part of town," Hendron told Venues Today. "Frankly, the only reason anyone would go there would be to purchase crack cocaine."

Hendron said she wasn't referring to any particular neighborhood and she intended the remark to be off-the-record. The reporter for Venues Today, Dave Brooks, said he stands by his story and said Hendron never told him anything was off-the-record.

St. Louis officials argue that more than 1 million people live in suburbs outside the city and including them in studies would greatly dilute the overall crime rate. They argue that new lofts, restaurants and offices downtown show the city is safer than the study concluded.

I s'pect that's true in about every major city in the world

Social filth and decay tends to begin in clusters, metastasizing as much as it is allowed to.  The Saint Louis Police should be commended for containing this mess as well as they have....I'm guessing that political pressures placed upon them prevent them from doing a more thorough job, just as is the case in most big US cities.

And I'm guessing that the local Dems chastised him severely for his poor effort......a 12-vote per Dead Crack Addict minimum is what they generally shoot for, or so I understand   :-)

Perhaps you could fill us in on the CV of your tour guides?

Does CV mean something similar to 'qualifications'?  (scratching furry stoat head in bafflement)

My understanding is that the Saint Louis Tourism Board has a rich and talented pool of Tour Guide applicants, despite the Board's dedication to high standards.

Tour Guides are expected to have a minimum of 20 felony arrests (in order to better assist tourists in any interactions with law enforcement professionals)

Multiple-stab-wound recipients are accepted at minimum, with preference given to survivors of close-range shotgun blasts (this experience assists tourists who are in any need to interact with local healthcare providers, which is typical for tourists)

Proficiency in English is discouraged, as this is viewed as being 'elitist' when interacting with the richly diversified cultural mosaic of Saint Louis.  Jive, guttural street slang and grunting, incoherent 'rap-speak' is preferred as these forms of communication provide a more immersive vacation experience for the visitor.

High IQ is similarly discouraged, as this has been found to be a barrier to a cohesive, interactive vacation experience.

Local knowledge is essential, particularly in the realms of Cheap Handgun Acquisition and Illicit Drug Procurement.

This is only a partial listing of qualifications and I'm sure that others can cite additional attributes demanded of Tour Guides.

Don't laugh, it is very important to know where those districts are. I had the unpleasant experience of getting online directions from a mapping service that shall remain nameless when trying to get to the Sanford FL Amtrak station. I foolishly asked for the quickest route instead of staying on main roads and ended up directed through the local crack district. It was a surreal roll-up-the-windows-and-lock-the-doors experience. Thank goodness it was daylight.

I grew up in St. Louis. I was a cop in St. Louis 40 yrs. ago. It was sliding into a sewer then because the Democrat politicians had a strangle-hold on the city. Decent people fled North, South, and West leaving the sewers to the rats and Democrats.

I think that East Saint Louis was the city that I heard Rush talk about on a few occasions, where they had abysmal schools, abysmal test scores and a rotten education system throughout.  They listened to the Teachers Unions who, as usual, blamed everything on insufficient funding, and they built one or more world-class High Schools, with indoor Olympic sized-swimming pools, and the latest and greatest of everything imaginable....they sunk untold millions into it.

And the test results went down even further.

The saddest part about it is the needless destruction of so many lives....the untabulated carnage of Socialism continues it's jackbooted march, destroying everything in it's path under the guise of 'compassion'.

Mary Hendron accidentally spoke the plain truth and will be pilloried as a result of her indiscretion.

Translation: The city's crime rate isn't all that bad, once you include the rest of the state.

Secretary Madeleine Korbel Albright's personal assistant maintains the secretary's CV in a proper envelope always ready for a PR event.

John Bolton had a thin sketch of past entry level jobs. It now seems to have been misplaced.

Curriculum Vitae

the Latin term curriculum vitæ (often abbreviated CV) is instead used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and some Commonwealth countries, as well as in the academic fields in North America, and in many languages other than English. In some regions (such as Australia and India) CV and résumé are used interchangeably.
