Everyone Is Entitled To My Opinion (from David Brinkley when liberals were human)

David Brinkley wrote this little book years ago. My wife and I found it at a flea market (wouldn't you know it) years ago.

Fifty cents was just enought to bring home a gentle and courteous man's words of wit and journalistic acumen.

As the Liberty Journal wrote of his manner, "with his near rapier-thrust of amiable malice ............ many pieces of armor are pierced. "Everyone Is Entitled to My Opinion will pleasantly beguile."

As Booklist commented on David's book, "It captures an urbane newsman's sense of the absurd in politics and in daily life."

And from the San. Francisco Chronicle, "A gem....... Provides a nostalgic look at the famous curmudgeonly sweetheart of TV news and a reminder that good reporting sometimes comes packaged in the small ironies of life."

The undiluted David Brinkley. He marvels at government regulations that require paint cans to bear a label reading, "Do not drink paint."

............ He observes that, "if we can put a man on the moon, we could put Congress in orbit."

****

Not a bad idea.

that is a great book. I think I found it at a sale at the library a dozen or so years ago.

Yes, liberals are human. It's the Jihadi leftists that threaten to take the "civil" out of civilization.

In the same way we call an "moderate" Muslims to reject Jihad, we ought call on "human" liberals to reject the Left.

The Left is the West's jihad.

Used to love his editorials at the end of his Sunday morning show. Lots of common sense. Ideas like having a tax code to raise money and putting all the behavior modification somewhere else.

His book about the home front in WWII was interesting too. We won that war because a shadow government was put in place. The $1/year men ran the the war while the elected officials spent their time in their normal circle-jerks. Maybe that's why governing while fighting wars today is so difficult.

THAT is exactly what this little book is..... a collection of those short commentaries.

The man was a sweetheart. God ..... I wish there were men like him today.

Mark Steyn may be one.

David earned my respect when he said after the 1996 election results:

"[Clinton] has not a creative bone in his body. Therefore, he's a bore and will always be a bore. Therefore we have to look forward to four years of wonderful, inspiring speeches full of wit, poetry, music, love and affection. More goddamn nonsense."

From the book on the subject of Congressional spending:

The session of Congress beginning tomorrow may not do much ----- a little bread and a few circuses ---- but it may well vote a 5-cent increase in the gasoline tax, the idea being to repair highways, bridges and so on, and to put some of the unemployed back to work. Practically everybody says it's a nice idea.

But the Democrats want to spend the money where unemployment is highest; the Republicans want to spend the money where the repairs need to be made. And the two are not always in the same places.

****

ROFL.

A cheaper solution would be the one proposed by Walter Williams years ago: Pay each of these clowns a million bucks a year to STAY HOME. At 535 million, it would be a bargain (and less costly than shooting them into space).

I'd add one other element: Cut them off from all contact with OTHER members lest they set up some sort of telecom quorum system for VOTING on spending.

David Brinkley was probably a liberal in some sense, but he was much too grounded in reality to buy into the stupidity of liberal government programs. He had a wonderful, easygoing skepticism and he hated BS, whatever its source. I really miss that twinkle in the eye and bemused grin.

He also had a great story about going out to a dinner with a bunch of Kennedys and getting stuck with the check. He was appalled at their cheapness, but knew it was amusing enough to make a good story.

"we ought call on "human" liberals to reject the Left."

Conservatives need to reject the left. Reject familial and social relationships with the left.

Thanksgiving at shared with the enemy is MUCH more inappropriate and disgusting than an interview with insane killer Simpson.

The Dims have gone from Bill "The Man from Hope!"
To Hillary the "Abandon All Hope..." Clinton.

Just ask General Abazaid.

Walter is one great and funny guy...... and "a very handsome man."
