Republican Rep. Heather Wilson retained her seat Friday, narrowly winning a fifth term in Congress by defeating Democrat Patricia Madrid and overcoming election-season sentiment that battered GOP incumbents nationwide.
Wilson won New Mexico's 1st Congressional District after Bernalillo County Clerk Mary Herrera released the county's final unofficial count Friday night.
The final unofficial tally was 105,916 votes for Wilson, and 105,037 for Madrid. That gave Wilson a winning margin of 879 votes with roughly 211,000 ballots cast in the race.
''The people of New Mexico have asked me to continue to represent them in the Congress,'' Wilson said Friday night. ''I am humbled by that trust, and I will work every day to continue to earn it.''

Becasue the Democrat vote fraudsters take better guesses these days - but sometimes they still fall a bit short. ;)
I feel you are right, unfortunately.
That means that DemocRATS gained 29 seats in the House.
Oh, speaking of New Mexico, Pete Domenici told "The Hill" that he will run for reelection. Very nice of him to do that, as he will be 76 in 2008.
HA! I thnk you heard wrong. It was South Broadway (location of the voting machine warehouse). Normally, the absentee/provisional counting and canvassing would occur in the voting machine warehouse, but the roof fell in after the record-setting monsoons we had this summer. That's why the counting took place in that office buiding off I-25 and Montano. If any "found" ballots show evidence of water damage, we'll know how old they are.
Those voting machines need to be investigated. They didn't vote D like they were hacked to.
I hope Pete reconsiders. My political dream would be Wilson succeeding Domenici and Darren White running for the 1st District seat. I think Darren would have a good chance of holding the seat for the Reps and he seems to be a bit more conservative than Heather (who I still like and respect very much).
I think that Domenici is doing this to keep Democrats from winning his seat. Either Bill Richardson or Tom Udall would be very difficult to defeat for the time being. No one the GOP has can match their statewide name recognition. While I would like for a new Republican to succeed Domenici, I don't see that happening in 2008.
I agree with your assessment about the motivation, but have you seen Pete speak in public lately? Frankly, it's pretty embarassing.
If Richardson decides to run for Senate, instead of VP (who are we kidding, the man isn't presidential), there's some pretty dark closets that will be cleaned out. Udall, on the other hand has constituents that don't even know his name. Having a (D) behind your name is enough to get elected in Northern NM, but means much less in the rest of the state.
I think the political-powers-that-be in the Republican party are misunderestimating both Wilson and Pearce.
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he has every intention of running again in '08.
50/50?
When you take voter fraud into account...
Dead, incarcerated & illegal voters enabled
by the Dems ... It could be more like 70/30.
Pollyanna
Brewer said many states that have automatic vote-recount provisions have race-margin thresholds of 0.5 percent. New Mexico does not have an automatic provision for a vote recount, but candidates can ask for recounts.
Under state law, the candidate would have to pay for the recount in advance. But if the outcome of the race changes because error or fraud is found, the state would pick up the tab for the recount.
mmmm...Thanks
I wonder what they will do
Technically, the 'Rats gained 30 -- 29 of ours and the VT Socialist seat.
I'm glad Domenici is running again, may he live to 100... or until we build up a larger farm team of NM Republicans.
The D's just threw the best they had at her during the worst year for R's, ans she made it.
She's also the only person in Congress I know of that has a PhD in International Relations.
She's the kind of person we need in Congress. This should make her a rising star.
Strongly disagree. We cannot afford a difficult seat in '08 if we are to have any chance of retaking the Senate in '08.
I hope Wilson hangs on for another few terms, then hopefully, Bingaman will retire and she can run for his seat.
Do you ever want to have the majority again?
Then you should care if she was re-elected.
All very true. She's also the first female military veteran to serve in Congress.
Really? Didn't know that. I knew she was in the military, didn't know she was the first. Cool.
It's the women voters,stupid...party may not be an issue here.(and no I'm not calling you stupid, just paraphrasing a Stephanopoulus slogan from '92)
I'm not sure how gender could have decided NM-1. Both candidates were women.
