Democrats demand CIA detainee documents

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 53 minutes ago

A Senate Democrat who will chair its Judiciary Committee next year asked the Justice Department to release newly acknowledged documents setting U.S. policy on how suspects in the war on terrorism are detained and interrogated.

"The American people deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism and concern at home and around the world," Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), D-Vt., wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Leahy demanded two documents whose existence the CIA recently acknowledged in response to a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

"If President Bush and the Justice Department authorized the CIA to torture its prisoners, the public has a right to know," said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU attorney involved in the case.

The first document is a directive Bush signed giving the CIA authority to set up detention facilities outside the U.S. and outlining interrogation methods that may be used against detainees.

The second is a 2002 memo from the Justice Department's office of Legal Counsel to the CIA General Counsel regarding interrogation methods that the spy agency may use against top al Qaida members.

Leaky Leahy = the Frank Church of the new millennium.

This crap will really boost the morale of the young patriots who are thinking about careers in national defense or intelligence.

I'm wondering...is there a single state in this country that has a Congressional delegation that is filthier than that of Vermont?

You need to look no further than a little south and a little east of Vermont, in Massachusetts.

"The American people deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism and concern at home and around the world,"

The American people deserve....the American people deserve that we get the most information out of these people as possible, and frankly, I don't care how they do it. And I think this is the way most Americans feel, unless they're screaming lefties who hate this country.

In a country where treason is in vogue and anti-Americanism is the height of intellectual fashion, it's hard to crown a single person as Greatest Traitor in America. But Leahy gets my vote.

Leaky Leahy performing the full Monica on terrorists and haters of America everywhere. He's raised it to an art form. I bet he even wears thong style diapers.

What I'm waiting for are demands from the Republicans that those who fight against measures that were enacted to save us from terrorism be brought to trial for attempting to endanger our safety- but then again I'm hoping to fly to Mars next week for a short vacation too.

First of all,a geography lesson.Yes,Massachusetts is south of Vermont but only a portion of the state is east of MA ;-)

As for filthiness....I'm all too aware of how filthy the Massachusetts delegation is.I am,after all,a lifelong resident of the Peoples' Republic. The question I asked was "is there a filthier delegation".The delegations of the two states are equally filthy,IMO.

I wonder how Leahy, Sanders, et al, would fare if Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain boys were still around? Tarring, feathering and riding out of town on a rail would be the best they could expect.

My only hope is these patriots can't look down from Heaven and see what is going on in a State they once sacrificed so mightily for.

Last time I checked, the ACLU was not an intelligence-gathering arm of the US Government. If they "learned" the titles of CIA documents governing interrogations, it means someone within the government leaked them the information. It's tempting to think that this was yet another mole within the Agency (possibly that renegade b*tch who was recently fired), but it seems even more likely that some Democrat on the Intelligence Committee accessed the documents, informed the ACLU of their existence, and then "called Leahy's attention" to the ACLU lawsuit.
