Nancy Pelosi has managed to severely scar her leadership even before taking up the gavel as the new speaker of the House. First, she played politics with the leadership of the House Intelligence Committee to settle an old score and a new debt. And then she put herself in a lose-lose position by trying to force a badly tarnished ally, Representative John Murtha, on the incoming Democratic Congress as majority leader. The party caucus put a decisive end to that gambit yesterday, giving the No. 2 job to Steny Hoyer, a longtime Pelosi rival.
But Ms. Pelosis damage to herself was already done. The well-known shortcomings of Mr. Murtha were broadcast for all to see from his quid-pro-quo addiction to moneyed lobbyists to the grainy government tape of his involvement in the Abscam scandal a generation ago. The resurrected tape feasted upon by Pelosi enemies shows how Mr. Murtha narrowly survived as an unindicted co-conspirator, admittedly tempted but finally rebuffing a bribe offer: Im not interested at this point.
Mr. Murtha would have been a farcical presence in a leadership promising the cleanest Congress in history. Ms. Pelosi should have been first to realize this, having made such a fiery campaign sword of her vows to end Capitol corruption. Instead, she acted like some old-time precinct boss and lost the first test before her peers.
As incoming speaker, Ms. Pelosi will be dogged by skepticism from within the party and without about her political smarts and her ability to deliver a galvanized agenda.

Nancy Pelosi: worst female Speaker of the House in history!
Murtha gets his reward for sticking that shank into the backs of our troops and then twisting it, for no reason other than returning the Dims to power. Here's hoping that fat, vile, traitorous scumbag chokes on these thirty pieces of silver from the NYT.
Moran can call on the old Mafia dons that hung around with Pelosi's father when he was the mayor of Baltimore. They'll break their knee caps.
"...giving the No. 2 job to Steny Hoyer, a longtime Pelosi rival."
Checks and balances!
Bwaaaahaaaahahaaaaaa!
I've said it before and I'll repeat it now (and I'm not kidding):
Bush should spend the next 2 years inside the strongest, deepest military mountain complex we have. If Pelosi becomes President...
If the likes of Moran begin threatening some of these newbies, they're going to see a repeat of the switches during slick willie's first term.
Only weaklings start backing up when the going gets tough.
GOOD GRIEF! THis from the NY Times?
HEY, a new nickname for Pelosi, I like that one! That's a keeper!
My husband recalls a poll he saw a long time ago. When asking voters about corruption on the Hill, the voters said that YES, the congressmen and senators are corrupt, EXCEPT for their own representatives.
Everyone seemed to believe that their guy was the only one in Washington with morals.
I often find myself thinking that everyone from the Executive on down is JUST a politician and that not only do they all run in the same circles but they all think the same way about their constituents... pawns used to rise to higher office.
What savage indignation! If Pinch and his pals were so concerned about Murtha's morals, maybe they should have brought this up BEFORE THE ELECTION. Just two weeks ago, however, Murtha could do no wrong, according to The New York Times.
"If Murtha's past actions raise ethics questions about his fitness to be Majority Leader, why is he even a Congressman in the first place? Too corrupt to be leader, but not corrupt enough to be defeated by Irey."
Because one doesn't have to be honest to be a Senator or Congressman. One may even be a murderer and get re-elected over and over and over. Either the voters are effectively led by the nose by the mainstream media, or else the elections are fixed and the ballot box is a sham.
How else could we get the sorry lot that more than fills the seats in the Senate and Congress?
GW could really make it hot for her now. Because they are preaching Bipartisanship on the issues, He should come out and state that he would not sign any bill or law that doesn't have COMPLETE bipartisan support!
Funny how the Times drags this out after the election. Hillary is already throwing Pelosi under the bus. There is only room for one queen (and many queers) in the dem party. Good to see that Hillary and Pinchy are working together to create a spirit of bipartisanship within the dem party.
Bella Pelusi strikes again!
