I think most people would hold their nose and vote for McPain if it came down to him and Hillary.

Not so sure.

I think it would be like last Tuesday ('06) when a good portion of solid Republicans stayed away from the polls out of demoralization and disgust.

Very well put. My own take is somewhat simpler: Please God don't make me have to vote for this loser!

I'll vote for liberal Rudy before "maverick" (i.e. back-stabber) McCain.

Easily.

Doesn't matter. McLame is going to get shoved down our throats, anyway. The Beast must be salivating.

The other thing about McCain I hate is that the drive-by is continually saying "front runner", "leading the pack", or other such drivel.

Our POLL proves those statements are a BIG FAT LIE!!

McCain isn't going to be shoved down my throat. We have primary seasons for a reason, and that is the time to stop this one cold. Conservatives just have to figure out who the most viable genuine conservative is, and back him.

Those who are in a rush to call us McCain-bashers disloyal Republicans forget that he is not yet the nominee of the party, and we are free to oppose him without being labelled disloyal.

McCain is perfectly capable of rehabilitating himself with conservatives by making amends for past statements and actions. He will be very convincing. The problem is that he cannot be trusted, as he showed us in his race against W, and as his first wife found out.

There is *no* doubt in my mind that once elected, he would abandon all conservative positions faster than you can say "no new taxes!"

Your point is a good one -- the ones who did the demoralizing were those in the GOP who betrayed conservative principles and positions. The ones who generated disgust were those in the GOP who hit on male interns and bloated themselves on pork.

Who's to blame for that? Seems pretty clear to me.

I'm a diehard Republican, and I got out to vote, and chased as many people as I could to the polls to vote Republican. But the average conservative American isn't terribly political, because most people who live conservative lives understand that politics is one of the lesser priorities of life -- behind family, work, church, community, hunting/fishing...

It is the job of politicians who want the votes of conservatives, who by definition don't care for anything to do with the government, to motivate and inspire them to get out and vote -- not demoralize, disgust, and discourage them.

That's what leadership means, and there wasn't quite enough of it in this last election cycle on the GOP side.

I do not rely on cookies to ensure uniqueness. The cookie is used as a display hint to know when to show the results. Without the cookie you're able go through the motions, but your vote will not be tallied if you have previously registered a vote in a result set.

Two result sets are kept. One for each distinct screen name and another for each distinct IP address. As currently implemented, your vote is tallied in only one of the result sets, screen name if you're logged in, IP address if not. These two result sets correspond to "member" and "non-member" opinions in the software. I'm assuming if you're not logged in you're not "a member" (i.e. a registered user with a screen name.)

This means you can vote under your screen name, clear all your cookies, and vote again for your IP address. And you are able to cast votes for as many distinct IP addresses and distinct screen names you can acquire. But even though no error message is given, only one unique screen name or one unique IP address per poll is recorded.

Email that I sent to Brit yesterday -

Hello Brit,

This is why John McCain has zero chance of becoming President of our country.

Latest FReeper poll from conservative news forum Free Republic -

http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/poll?poll=165

Even if McCain somehow sneaks through the primaries to win the GOP nomination a significant number of the REAL conservative base of the Republican party will not support him.

I am one of those conservatives who will never vote for McCain. And it does NOT matter who he might be matched up against in a potential 2008 Presidential campaign.

The potential candidates for 2008 that I can't not stand the most, ranking the worst at the top.

1.) John McCain
2.) John McCain
3.) John McCain
4.) john kerry
5.) hillary clinton

Later,

Tony in Boulder
