Senator John McCain envisions a different direction for the Republican Party after last week's devastating defeats in congressional elections and in laying it out, the Republican is sending an implicit message that he should be the next leader.
"We departed rather tragically from our conservative principles," McCain lamented recently, offering his take on why the Republicans fell from power in Congress. He urged a return to what he called the foundation of the Republican Party restrained spending, smaller government, lower taxes, a strong national defense and family values....
McCain is positioning himself as the Republicans' standard-bearer while President George W. Bush takes on lame-duck status and dispirited party faithful search for a road to recovery...
The Arizona senator will deliver speeches Thursday to the Federalist Society and GOPAC...
McCain is taking advantage of the postelection period to outline a vision for the party much like Ronald Reagan did after the Republican defeat in the 1976 presidential election and, perhaps, preview the central theme of a presidential campaign.
He spent 2006 sowing goodwill within the Republican ranks, making 346 campaign appearances, raising $10.5 million (8.2 million) for candidates and donating another nearly $1.5 million (1.2 million) to their races. He directed most of his donations in the final month of the campaign to races in Iowa and New Hampshire.
In the meantime, his aides were busy building grass-roots organizations and lining up support in crucial states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, with local officials affiliating themselves with his political action committee Straight Talk America.
Politically, he continued to build upon his reputation from 2000 as an independent in the party while also seeking to repair splinters with the conservative wing still angry over some of his positions.

Vintage McCain. He believes he can knife us in the back repeatedly and then have to do nothing more than smooth over some "splinters."
Not following your road, John.
ROFLMAO BUMP! Nothing like an unbiased opinion.

McCain can take his new direction and stick it where the sun don't shine!
Doesn't he realize its disgust with pseudo-conservatives like him that helped keep people away from the polls?
He might lead the Republicans, but not the conservatives.
Right now the MSM, DummyCrats and RINOS support Rudy, Romney or McCain.
Look at the people that are elected state wide, none can win.
We have several conservatives that will start to get wider notice as time goes by.
Anybody that jumps on the bandwagon of the three the MSM want are not conservative.
Mc Cain is an ego-maniac and can only get about 18 percent this time Bye Bye John
Fingers in ears...la-la-la...I CAN'T HEAR YOU McLaim!
Who's going to check this road for landmines?
He spent 2006 sowing goodwill within the Republican ranks,
Really?
Yeah, Chafee is nuts about him.
The only position I would like to see McLame in is bending over whilst somebody kicks his butt over to his own kind across the aisle.....the Demonrats!
The only Highway to Hell I want is AC/DC.
"We departed rather tragically from our conservative principles," McCain lamented recently, offering his take on why the Republicans fell from power in Congress."
