My take was that the author employed exaggerations that he felt were humorous, but that he generally believes the sentiment behind them. No, I don't think he's serious about Pappa Bush, but I do get the sense that some on the left are afraid that this victory could be phyrric.

Something about the election plays at the back of my mind, though. The whole thing is very strange. The fact that the dems didn't lose a single seat, the fact that the Repubs lost almost every single one. I did wonder if Bush was maybe enjoying their gloating a little bit. Like he was saying ok loudmouths, lets see you take the heat for a little while. But he knows he still has enough control to rein them in if need be.
