Healthcare for illegal immigrants between the ages of 18 and 64 cost American taxpayers $1.1 billion in 2000 or about $11 per household according to a study released Tuesday by the Rand Corp.
The research, published in the November/December edition of the journal Health Affairs, put the cost in Los Angeles County that year at $204 million.
"There are taxpayer implications to illegal immigration, but healthcare is not one of them," said Jim Smith, a senior economist with Rand and author of the study. "Why are we talking about healthcare when that's only $1 billion a year?"
The Federation for American Immigration Reform questioned the study's conclusions, saying it estimates the total cost of healthcare for illegal immigrants in California alone at $1.4 billion.
"From the studies that we have done, [the Rand study] certainly is a low-ball estimate " said Jack Martin of the federation. "But there are issues other than cost . ...
The Rand study, which surveyed Los Angeles County residents about their use of healthcare services and then used national estimates on cost to put a price tag on the care, found that nearly 22% of illegal immigrants have health insurance, which covered about $362 million in costs in 2000. The immigrants themselves paid $321 million out of pocket.
Though other estimates of some healthcare costs for undocumented immigrants exist, it is hard to compare them directly to the Rand findings.
In fiscal year 2004-05, California's Medi-Cal program covered $946 million in services for impoverished illegal immigrants, including coverage for emergencies, prenatal care, limited cancer treatment, abortions and nursing home care. In 2003, Los Angeles County estimated that it spent $340 million on public hospital and clinic care for illegal immigrants not covered by Medi-Cal.

Illegals:the gift that keeps on giving.
Only $1 billion.
I can think of much better uses for $1 billion.
Hell!! its only a Billion dollars a year. Peanuts right?
Of course that a billion that could go to health care for real Amricans, But, what the heck, its a small price to pay to help out Vincente Fox's boys.
What a joke, to believe one out of every five healthcare $ for illegals would be spent in Los Angeles? This study is a joke as the California State and LA hospital #'s alone are more than the billion the Rand Study quotes.

That number sounds way too low.
..certainly no agenda here. Move along now, nothing to see here.
Here is the epitome of what is wrong on the economic side of this equation. A billion here, a billion there. What are a few more billions? [/sarcasm]
I'll tell you what is wrong with it you non-X pert. Those are American citizens' BILLIONS being given over to support people illegally entering and thenm staying in this country. They should be able to keep it in their own pockets and not have it bandied about and so lightly spoken of by the likes of stuffed shirts like yourself.
...and in 2006?
Yeah, I can't even afford health care insurance, yet my tax dollars are paying for free illegal health care. What the h*ll's wrong with this picture? (rhetorical)

This is just for CA. and, as admitted by the author, is lowballed. Let's multiply the cost across the rest of the U.S. and see what folks say then.

In this way, the roughly six million legal immigrants without a high school diploma will impose a net cost of around a half-trillion dollars on U.S. taxpayers over their lifetimes. |

The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Californians: Executive Summary
http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=iic_immigrationissuecentersffec
more than $10.1 billion in costs incurred by California taxpayers is composed of outlays in the following areas:
Education. Based on estimates of the illegal immigrant population in California and documented costs of K-12 schooling, Californians spend approximately $7.7 billion annually on education for illegal immigrant children and for their U.S.-born siblings. Nearly 15 percent of the K-12 public school students in California are children of illegal aliens.
Health care. Uncompensated medical outlays for health care provided to the state's illegal alien population amount to about $1.4 billion a year.
Incarceration. The cost of incarcerating illegal aliens in California's prisons and jails amounts to about $1.4 billion a year (not including related law enforcement and judicial expenditures or the monetary costs of the crimes that led to their incarceration).
Almost one billion dollars just on illegals' healthcare! Our state's budget was around 130 billion. How much more do we spend to incarcerate their criminals? Over 40% of the L.A. County penal system is illegals. What about the cost to public schools? Over 40% of the kids on L.A. county public schools are the kids of illegals.
No matter how much the L.A. Slimes wants to white wash it, the illegals have ruined California in almost every conceivable way they could. They are a disaster and our elected officials have drunk the Mexican Kool Aid and caved in to them entirely.
Over 10% of their population have come flooding into our country and Bush wants to bring in 20 million more!!! You think that California's problems aren't yours? Guess what, all of this is coming to your town soon.
Yeah, but those cheap fruit and veggies sure were good, huh? ;-)
Hey, Dane, if we just legalize all of them, we can instantly say we've saved $1.1 billion.
