Just 4 years of backstabbing and power plays.

Yet he still won the vote?

Also, there is respect, and admiration, but no seniority. Frist was a baby in seniority terms...

You simply don't like Lott, and are creating excuses...

BTW, sorry I provoked you, but the idea is to think, not react in a knee jerk fashion. They me continue to provoke! That fact is, that Lott was tainted, not by his fellow senators, but by the GOP base in concert with the democrats. This forced the president to distance himself. This was the first time I began to seriously worry about the future of the party, and all my fears came to reality.

We went from trying to micromanage the senate, to more of the same with both houses and the presidency, and it resulted in what happened last week.

I don't think you can deny that, but yet so many do.

Which is why we lose again in 08....012.....016 or until we understand that it takes a supporting coalition to win, and the same to stay in power.

So. we're going to just give it to the dems because none of our potential candidates walk on water? With the exception of McCain the worst of our candidates is better than Hillary.

I will get behind the nominee, as I always do. Regardless of the fact I may be required to hold my nose.

But this "Base" as it is currently constructed, will not. it will fracture again, and again.

It is no longer viable enough to win elections...IMO...

I am hoping the shoddy treatment ht got in that race-baiting witch hunt grew him a spine. We will see...but you are probably right. :(

That's exactly what Hillary is counting on. I expect we will see a lot more trolls showing up on places like FR to help bring about hate and discontent. She needs a third party badly. If you translate Carvell's comments today that is short hand for have to get rid of Dean so we can install a Hillarybot in his place to make certain she gets the nomination.

Yup....That is what is happening, but Hillary and Soros needed our help to do it.

I suppose that in the big picture, you could use the pendulum analogy.

I think the best way to understand a problem is to analyze it in all it's ugliness, and discuss it. If you know what the disease is, you can treat it, or stop doing the things that aggravate it.

One key ingredient is to invoke Reagan's 11th commandment. "Thou shall never say unkind things about fellow republicans."

The GOP is toast. Time for a third party ... the Conservative way. The RINO way doesn't cut it.

"Let me be the contrarian who thinks this is GREAT. Trent Lott was a great Whip in the House and the Senate. Much better man for the job than milquetoasty Lamar Alexander, and Alexander is up for reelection in 2008 and needs to pay attention to his own race."

I AGREE.

Lott's got issues, but this is #2. It's a whip job, an inside vote-counting job and Lott can do it fine.

We also have a strong overall leadership bench, except for losing Santorum: Kyl moved up, Cornyn moved in, and McConnell leads. McConnell is better than Frist.

"I have been hearing that Lott is the best at Whipping. Which just happens to be what the Whip does. This is going to be a powerhouse Senate that will be a force to be reckoned with for the Dems and the Administration."

Correct... If we get a feisty leadership like the GOP had in 1992 and 1993 under Dole, we can do more good than a wimpy RINOized majority. I think the team overall will be okay in the Senate. The real line in the sand is the number of ocnservative votes for filibusters.

If we can get 40 solid filibuster votes to stop anything in its tracks, we can prevent the Democrats from running riot.

"It is very sad that the level of desperation and anger have reached such a bottom among some conservatives that they are now going crazy about the Republican whip position in the Senate. May be the next wave of craziness should go for the chief of staff positions for each of the 49 GOP Senators, why not! Really pathetic guys, really pathetic."

LOL, aint it the truth!!!

And what's worse, Lott is one of the real solid conservatives, in the most conservative dozen or so in votes.

Are all these anti-Lott folks desperate to see Lamar! win?

his skills were honed when we were in the minority.

I remember the public relations skills he demonstrated after his chuckleheaded paean to Strom Thurmond, and his increasingly disgusting deer-in-the-headlight apologies for his apologies for his apologies.

However, his spending skills are beyond question. I'm sure he's just itching to use them, and his new friends the Democrats will be happy to help.

We all have our fingernails-on-the-blackboard politicians, and Lott is one of mine. I can't stand him. I suppose that he might actually be the best we've got for his current position, but as a prominent face of the Republican Party, oh please let it be a bad dream.

We agree on the toast, but it was not the moderates who screwed the election. It was the moderate voters who swung to the Dems because they were concerned about the Republicans and some of their actions.

One such action that gets absolutely no conservative attention is the recent internet gambling bill that we pushed through the congress for red meat for someone I guess.

I can name six people who voted dem last week, because of that one issue, and the issue is not even a conservative issue, yet we shoved it down a lot of people's throats.

So much for the personal responsibility, and lack of regulation plank....

There were others.....like Schiavo, Immigration and the like.

We PO'd a few here, and few there, and pretty soon you are talking minority......

"If Lott is the best we've got, then we're going to be in the minority for a long time.

But he isn't. We have Jeff Sessions, John Cornyn, Jon Kyl. We have some real conservatives. That makes this doubly disappointing."

Don't be. Lott was whip for many years in the House and the Senate. In a tough legislative situation like being in a minority, he's done this job before. Lott was a better pick for this than Lamar, for sure.

Cornyn and Kyl are great ... which is why you should be happy that Cornyn and Kyl are both now in key leadership positions, numbers 4 and 3 respectively.

I also want to see Sessions get more visibility. We'll see.

Coburn is great but has been too abrasive to get a leadership job.

Coburn got into trouble in his election race because he called legislators 'pinheads' or some label like that...
and then he got into trouble by exposing Sen stevens' "bridge to nowhere" and pushing a vote on it in the senate, which in turn got Stevens to threaten senators individually if they voted with Coburn on his amendment (it went down in flames).

Coburn's not a team player.

I think I'd just prefer he stay that way. He rocks. :-)

I blame Bush for open borders, adoration of amnesty, reckless social overspending, nominating Miers, firing Rummy, historically scant use of the veto pen, an inability to articulate a case, and failure to rouse continued support for our troops abroad among other things.

I blame Congress. I mean, banning internet gambling? Come on.

I have thought things over and almost agree with you. If the plan is to fight the other side, he can be of use.

Ya know, I really do hope you find that third party, because you sure are not helping this one.

That's OK, we will be forced to move center to pick up the losses, but that's the name of the game.

Reagan did it, and PO'd every conservative on the planet, and now they revere him as the father of conservatism....

Funny how politics works....It boggles the mind.
